Your cleansing balm questions, answered

How are cleansing balms different from traditional facial cleansers?

Cleansing balms are oil-based, solid-to-cream formulas that work differently from traditional gel or foaming cleansers. “They dissolve makeup, sunscreen, and impurities using the principle of like-dissolves-like,” says Dr. Sung. “Since many cosmetics and sunscreens are oil-soluble, an oil-based cleansing balm breaks them down efficiently. Think about how some drugstore ‘beach’ sunscreens leave a stubborn, water-resistant finish that won’t rinse away with just water. These balms bind to these oils, lifting them off the skin.”

Once water is added, emulsifiers in the balm help it rinse away cleanly. Foaming and gel cleansers, on the other hand, rely on surfactants to bind with oil and water, which can be effective but more drying. “They can be more aggressive and sometimes strip the skin of its natural moisture,” Dr. Sung notes. That’s why cleansing balms are ideal for dry or sensitive skin, and anyone who wears daily sunscreen (a.k.a., everyone!).

Do dermatologists recommend cleansing balms?

Many dermatologists recommend cleansing balms as a gentle and effective way to remove makeup, sunscreen, and impurities. “I often recommend cleansing balms, particularly for those with dry or sensitive skin,” says Dr. Collins. “They provide a gentle yet effective cleanse and can help prevent irritation compared to harsher, foaming cleansers.” Because they’re oil-based, balms break down oil-soluble products without stripping the skin’s natural moisture barrier. However, “I also advise my patients with acne-prone skin to follow up with a water-based cleanser to ensure no residue is left behind, as some balm formulas can be too heavy for them,” she says.

How do I use cleansing balm?

To use a cleansing balm, start with dry skin and dry hands. “Apply to dry skin and massage in circular motions,” says Dr. Sung. “This allows the oils to effectively and efficiently break down makeup and sunscreen.” Most products will recommend how much to use, but Dr. Sung suggests adjusting based on how much product you’re wearing: use a pea-size amount for light makeup, a blueberry-size dollop for full-face makeup, and a grape-size blob if you’re removing both makeup and sunscreen. “Let it sit for about 60 seconds, then rinse thoroughly using a washcloth and generous amounts of water to activate the emulsifiers, which help lift everything off your skin,” says Dr. Sung.
