Let’s talk about cleansing balms, because once you try one, there’s no going back. The best cleansing balms don’t just take the day off; they melt away stubborn sunscreen, waterproof mascara, and the general grime of existence with the softest touch. “They’re often marketed as makeup-melting balms, or solid cleansing oils,” says Kristina Collins, MD, a double board-certified dermatologist based in Austin. “These terms all refer to the same concept—an oil-based cleanser in a balm-like consistency that emulsifies when mixed with water.” And when they’re made with nourishing ingredients, they do more than just cleanse. “They’re gentler, without disrupting the skin barrier, providing hydration while effectively removing debris,” says Sarah Sung, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist of derm boutique The Perq in Seattle.
To help you find the right one, Glamour editors teamed up with skin care experts to share their favorite formulas and answer all your cleansing balm questions—so you’ll know exactly what to use, how to use it, and why your skin will love it.
What our experts say: It’s hard to believe there are fewer than 10 ingredients in our favorite cleansing balm, because Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm is so powerful at breaking everything down. The balm-to-oil formula effortlessly melts waterproof makeup, sunscreen, and daily grime. “This balm is an industry staple for a reason—it removes even the most stubborn waterproof makeup and facial sunscreen without irritation. My patients love how easily it rinses off, leaving no greasy residue. It is also fragrance-free, making it a great option for all skin types, including sensitive skin,” says Dr. Sung. Dr. Collins calls it “a simple, fragrance-free option that’s great for sensitive skin and doesn’t leave behind a heavy residue.” It’s ophthalmologist-tested and noncomedogenic (meaning it won’t clog pores), so it’s safe for sensitive eyes and complexions. It’s a no-brainer for anyone who wants a low-maintenance routine with products that do all the hard work for you.
What our reviewers say: “I have dry, sensitive skin, so most makeup removers leave me red and irritated until I found this one. It melts off every bit of makeup and sunscreen—even my long-wear eyeliner—without any scrubbing, and once it turns into an oil, it has this really comfortable slip to it. And because it’s so moisturizing, my skin looked less red afterward,” says Glamour contributor Christa Lee.

What our experts say: Who says you can’t find a great cleansing balm under $10? CeraVe’s Makeup Removing Cleanser Balm proves you absolutely can. This velvety balm melts into a silky oil that quickly dissolves makeup, sunscreen, and excess oil—no harsh rubbing, no greasy residue. “Developed with dermatologists, this balm contains three essential ceramides and jojoba oil to cleanse while reinforcing the skin barrier. It’s affordable and effective, and works well for sensitive and dry skin types,” says Dr. Sung. It’s also fragrance-free and noncomedogenic, making it a go-to for anyone with easily irritated skin.
What our reviewers say: “I have oily, combination skin so I’ve always stayed away from balms (they feel so greasy) but I’ve noticed they’re so great for my skin barrier. As a shopping editor I’m constantly testing skin care products, and that can wreak havoc on my face. This CeraVe balm in particular keeps it balanced, and there’s no tight feeling post-wash. It removes my makeup so easily that I don’t need to double-cleanse most times. Though, if you’re wearing heavy eye makeup, I would recommend micellar water,” says Glamour senior commerce editor Jenifer Calle.

What our experts say: In Korean skin care, double cleansing isn’t just a step—it’s a foundational ritual rooted in care and intention. Then I Met You Living Cleansing Balm was created with that spirit in mind, inspired by the Korean concept of jeong, which celebrates deep, meaningful connections—including the one you have with your skin. “It’s not just about cleansing—it’s about treating your skin with intention, setting the stage for that coveted glass skin glow,” says Charlotte Cho, esthetician and cofounder of Then I Met You and onlin K-beauty shop Soko Glam. This cult-favorite balm (and one of our all-time favorite Korean cleansers) has a sorbet-soft texture that melts into a silky oil, effortlessly breaking down sunscreen, makeup, and buildup without stripping your skin. “Packed with sea buckthorn oil, this balm is rich in antioxidants and perfect for dry, dull skin. It has a luxurious texture and rinses off beautifully,” says Dr. Collins. With ingredients like persimmon extract, olive oil, and vitamin E, it nourishes as it cleanses, leaving your skin soft, balanced, and ready for the rest of your routine.
What our reviewers say: “I’m lucky I snapped a tester photo before I emptied the jar—it’s that good,” says Lee. “Like most Korean skin care products, it comes with a convenient spatula so you’re not dipping your fingers in and mixing dirt or oil into the formula. The experience of using it is really elegant—it melts so easily into your skin and feels incredibly luxe. The bright orange hue comes from the sea buckthorn oil, which is naturally rich in lycopene and carotenoids, packed with omegas and fatty acids that help plump and nourish the skin. It brightens and even helps keep my oily T-zone in check.”

What our experts say: If your dream cleanser feels like a spa treatment in a jar, Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm is it. The buttery texture melts into a silky oil and transforms into a milky cleanser as you rinse, sweeping away every trace of makeup, sunscreen, and grime, without leaving your skin feeling tight or greasy. “I love this cleanser because it is deeply nourishing, removes all traces of makeup and sunscreen, and leaves the skin feeling soft but not greasy,” says Dr. Collins, who calls it an all-time favorite. “It not only removes makeup effectively but also nourishes the skin with its unique formula that contains brown algae extract, camellia, elderberry, and jojoba,” says Samantha Susca, a lead esthetician at The Spa at Casa Cipriani in NYC. “It’s a great option for acne-prone skin or anyone new to balm cleansers—and especially helpful if your skin’s affected by pollution.” With a blend of skin-loving ingredients and calming essential oils like eucalyptus and lavender, your nightly cleanse becomes a luxe ritual.
What our reviewers say: “The first thing I noticed was the scent—it smells so spa-like and calming, it instantly makes washing my face feel like a treat,” says Lee. “The texture is bouncier than your average cleansing balm—not totally solid—which makes it feel extra luxurious. It melts into the skin beautifully and quickly breaks down makeup and sunscreen. That said, I’d still recommend a proper eye makeup remover if you’re wearing something heavy-duty like waterproof mascara.”

What our experts say: If your skin’s in need of a glow boost, try Natura Bissé’s Diamond Luminous Rich Luxury Cleanse. “My absolute favorite cleansing balm is the Diamond Luminous Rich Luxury Cleanse by Natura Bissé,” says Susca. “It’s a tri-texture balm—gel to oil to water—that cleanses and replenishes while brightening and evening skin tone with pomegranate extract.” She loves it especially for heavy makeup and SPF: “It has a thicker texture that melts into an easily workable oil and very effectively breaks down even the strongest sunscreen and heaviest makeup.” Glycerin gives it extra soothing power and humectant benefits, making it ideal for mature or dry skin, especially in colder months when the barrier needs more support. It still holds up beautifully in warmer weather, though Susca recommends following with a second cleanse or toner to sweep away anything you may have missed.
What our reviewers say: “If you’re debating the price, keep in mind that this jar is massive—seven ounces! It’ll last you forever. The texture is way more gel-like in the jar than most balms. It’s kind of bouncy, almost like glass skin in cleanser form. Once you rub it in and add water, it turns into this light, foamy lather that makes your skin feel squeaky clean and supersoft. I will note that waterproof eye makeup needed a little backup, but I’m still sold. I followed the recommendation on the box and left it on for five minutes as a mask. Boom: instant glow,” says Lee.

Best for Mature Skin: Banila Co Clean It Zero Original Cleansing Balm
What our experts say: If you’ve ever gone down a K-beauty rabbit hole on Reddit, you’ve most likely seen the Banila Co Clean It Zero Original Cleansing Balm pop up. This viral favorite has been a Korean skin care staple, known for its sherbet-like texture that melts into a silky oil and rinses off clean. It also has the green light from derms: “This hydrating cleansing balm instantly dissolves waterproof makeup and removes impurities while replenishing skin moisture levels. It’s also formulated with antioxidants like vitamin E and C to brighten and protect the skin,” says Dr. Sung. Its gentle, nonstripping formula helps maintain the skin’s moisture barrier—a must for aging skin that tends to be drier or more delicate.
What our reviewers say: “I always reach for this cleansing balm when I’ve been wearing makeup for hours and need a deep clean. It manages to slip into every crack and crevice to pick up makeup, SPF—you name it. My skin instantly feels refreshed post-wash. Waterproof makeup has nothing on this one; it lifts up just about everything,” says Glamour commerce writer Alanna Martine Kilkeary, who has acne-prone to oily skin.

What our experts say: Rooted in hanbang (traditional Korean herbal medicine), Beauty of Joseon Radiance Cleansing Balm is a modern spin on centuries-old skin care rituals. It’s made with rice bran oil and water—classic Korean ingredients known for brightening and softening skin. “This balm is the perfect partner for your double cleanse,” says Dr. Sung. “Rice bran is rich in amino acids and vitamin E. These power-packed nutrients leave your skin brightened and refreshed, while delivering gentle moisturization.” The soft texture melts into a silky oil that easily dissolves makeup, sunscreen, and buildup without leaving a greasy residue. Its fragrance-free formula is gentle on sensitive skin and helps keep breakout-prone complexions calm and balanced.
What our reviewers say: “This cleansing oil is gentle on my sensitive skin and very aptly melts away my makeup, including waterproof mascara. I like that it's fragrance-free, feels like butter, and leaves my face feeling moisturized after use. My only complaint is about its packaging; the plastic is hard for me to slide out,” says Glamour contributor Malia Griggs.

What our experts say: If you’ve ever looked at your full face of makeup at the end of the day and thought, Ugh, do I have to, Farmacy Green Clean Cleansing Balm makes cleansing feel less like a chore. This sorbet-like balm melts into a silky oil that effortlessly dissolves waterproof mascara, long-wear foundation, and heavy SPF without leaving any greasy residue. The recently updated formula (it was previously known as the Makeup Meltaway Cleansing Balm) is made with upcycled moringa, holy basil, and arugula for an antioxidant boost. “A great option for all skin types, this balm contains papaya enzymes for gentle exfoliation while effectively dissolving makeup. It’s excellent for breaking down waterproof makeup and heavy SPF,” says Dr. Collins. It rinses completely clean, which is especially helpful for acne-prone skin, since it won’t clog pores or leave behind any film that could lead to breakouts.
What our reviewers say: “I’m a huge fan of this gentle cleansing balm because it lathers really nicely and manages to pick up every last bit of grease, grime, and makeup. It has a fresh scent as well, and leaves my skin looking soft, bright and rejuvenated,” says Glamour’s Kilkeary.

What our experts say: Here at Glamour HQ, we’re suckers for a good ingredient story—and the Fig Cleansing Balm by I’m From delivers with figs sourced from the lush farms of Yeongam, South Korea, where the soil and climate are basically fig-growing nirvana. These antioxidant-rich figs give the balm its signature soft, silky texture. “This cleanser was a surprise gem in my routine,” says Cho. “I first picked it up out of curiosity—fig extract isn’t something you see often in cleansing balms. From the first use, I was hooked. The silky, lightweight texture glides effortlessly over my skin, breaking down makeup and sunscreen without any greasy residue. What I love most is how it leaves my skin feeling fresh and hydrated, thanks to the fig enzyme’s gentle exfoliation.”
What our reviewers say: “I was honestly shocked by how easily this balm melts everything off—mascara, eyeliner, even the most stubborn long-wear makeup,” says Lee. “It emulsifies beautifully and rinses clean without any residue. My skin feels so soft and nourished afterward that I’ve even skipped moisturizer on lazy nights and still woken up feeling hydrated.”

Best for Uneven Skin Tone: Eadem Dew Dream Cleansing Balm
What our experts say: It’s a common skin care myth that the harsher the cleanser, the better it’ll remove makeup and fade dark spots. In reality, a harsh cleanser just leaves your skin dry and irritated—mad at you, even. Eadam Dew Dream Hydrating Cleansing Balm changes that with a jelly-to-oil-to-milk formula that melts off makeup, sunscreen, and buildup without messing with your skin barrier. It’s packed with skin-soothing tiger grass, brightening licorice root, and nourishing Kalahari melon oil—and was made specifically with melanin-rich skin in mind. We also love that it comes in a mess-free squeeze tube, so you can better control the amount of product you’re getting out.
What our reviewers say: “While this is not a traditional balm, it’s pretty much one of my favorite cleansers in my collection because it has a jelly-like texture that’s a dream to apply. It also sucks up dirt and makeup with just a few lathers and leaves my skin looking totally clean and grime-free,” says Glamour’s Kilkeary.

How are cleansing balms different from traditional facial cleansers?
Cleansing balms are oil-based, solid-to-cream formulas that work differently from traditional gel or foaming cleansers. “They dissolve makeup, sunscreen, and impurities using the principle of like-dissolves-like,” says Dr. Sung. “Since many cosmetics and sunscreens are oil-soluble, an oil-based cleansing balm breaks them down efficiently. Think about how some drugstore ‘beach’ sunscreens leave a stubborn, water-resistant finish that won’t rinse away with just water. These balms bind to these oils, lifting them off the skin.”
Once water is added, emulsifiers in the balm help it rinse away cleanly. Foaming and gel cleansers, on the other hand, rely on surfactants to bind with oil and water, which can be effective but more drying. “They can be more aggressive and sometimes strip the skin of its natural moisture,” Dr. Sung notes. That’s why cleansing balms are ideal for dry or sensitive skin, and anyone who wears daily sunscreen (a.k.a., everyone!).
Do dermatologists recommend cleansing balms?
Many dermatologists recommend cleansing balms as a gentle and effective way to remove makeup, sunscreen, and impurities. “I often recommend cleansing balms, particularly for those with dry or sensitive skin,” says Dr. Collins. “They provide a gentle yet effective cleanse and can help prevent irritation compared to harsher, foaming cleansers.” Because they’re oil-based, balms break down oil-soluble products without stripping the skin’s natural moisture barrier. However, “I also advise my patients with acne-prone skin to follow up with a water-based cleanser to ensure no residue is left behind, as some balm formulas can be too heavy for them,” she says.
How do I use cleansing balm?
To use a cleansing balm, start with dry skin and dry hands. “Apply to dry skin and massage in circular motions,” says Dr. Sung. “This allows the oils to effectively and efficiently break down makeup and sunscreen.” Most products will recommend how much to use, but Dr. Sung suggests adjusting based on how much product you’re wearing: use a pea-size amount for light makeup, a blueberry-size dollop for full-face makeup, and a grape-size blob if you’re removing both makeup and sunscreen. “Let it sit for about 60 seconds, then rinse thoroughly using a washcloth and generous amounts of water to activate the emulsifiers, which help lift everything off your skin,” says Dr. Sung.
