Milk Makeup Hydro Grip 12-Hour Hydrating Gel Skin Tint
We put more than a dozen tinted moisturizers to the test, separating the best from the rest based on their ingredients, texture, coverage, and longevity.

Longevity
The best tinted moisturizers featured hydrating skin care ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin to help lock in moisture for hours. Some even contained skin-brightening elements like antioxidants and vitamins E and C to make skin look less dull.
The best tinted moisturizers had a lightweight, fresh finish that absorbed into the skin quickly and had medium to full coverage that helped conceal dark circles, hyperpigmentation, and acne.
Our favorite products lasted all day, without the need for touch-ups. They also played well with everything from concealers to cream blushes; some even had sun protection.
This product checks almost every box, which is why it was a home run for our best-overall slot. You’ll boost your skin’s natural look and texture with this lightweight gel skin tint that’s suitable for all skin types, from dry to oily and everything in between. The formulation blends hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and blue agave extract to keep the skin hydrated and radiant but never oily.
Testing notes: “I’m a massive fan of this hydrating gel skin tint because it’s lightweight, feels cooling upon application, and stays in place all day long. I have combination skin that sometimes gets very oily in spots, so I was hesitant at first to try this because of how many hydrators it’s packed with. The truth is, though, it has a jelly-like consistency that dries down to a matte yet glowy finish that keeps my skin looking blurred and smooth all day long, with little allowance for letting those oily spots crop up. I was also super impressed with the longevity of this pick; it lasted through a 12-hour workday with just a bit of concealer and powder. It’s noncomedogenic (meaning it won’t seep into pores!), which is perfect if you’re prone to acne. I can’t wait to keep using this tinted moisturizer, as I think it’s going to become a staple in my routine,” says Glamour commerce writer Alanna Martine Kilkeary.
This 2023 Glamour Beauty Award–winning skin tint proves you don’t have to break the bank to get great makeup. “This skin tint is my new best friend: It’s makeup magic minus the hassle,” Condé Nast global senior director of creative strategy Caroline Vickerson writes in her review. “The sheer coverage formula goes on like a serum and sinks in instantly. It’s infused with vitamin C for a bright, dewy finish that makes my skin look amazingly well-rested.”
Testing notes: “I absolutely love this skin tint!” says Glamour senior social media manager Jazmin Gathers. “I was a bit nervous about the color match when I initially put it on, but after letting it sit for a minute the color blended nicely with my complexion. It’s extremely matte, which is sometimes hard to find in a skin tint. I have oily skin, so I still applied my powder on top, but I didn’t experience any shine spots—even where I’m typically oily. The consistency is a bit watery, but a little goes a long way. I could definitely see myself wearing this as a no-makeup makeup throughout the summer.”
Key ingredients: Vitamin C
Size: 1 fl. oz.
Coverage: Light to medium
Pros: Affordable at under $20; available at your local drugstore; vitamin C brightens skin and lessens appearance of dark spots
Cons: Formula is a little runny
Best for Oily Skin: Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer (SPF 30)
If you’re looking for flawless light coverage that feels like skin, this tinted moisturizer with SPF is for you. With SPF 30, vitamin C, and French Polynesian kopara, it blurs imperfections while brightening and hydrating the complexion.
Testing notes: “If I need to condense steps into one product, I will opt for the Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 30,” says makeup artist Nick Lujan. “It has a higher SPF, which will help protect skin from around 96% of UVB rays—though you’ll still want to avoid the sun and reapply throughout the day.”
Key ingredients: Vitamin C, French Polynesian kopara

Make Up For Ever Super Boost Lightweight Moisturizing Skin Tint with Hyaluronic and Polyglutamic Acids
The best part about tinted moisturizers is how well they keep your skin hydrated and fresh all day long. If you feel like your skin is in need of a boost of moisture, we love this skin tint that blends hyaluronic and polyglutamic acids for a velvety-soft finish. Kasey Spickard, an NYC-based celebrity makeup artist, is also a fan. “This formula is super lightweight while providing a nice coverage that evens skin tone. It also plumps and hydrates the skin beautifully without being greasy or oily,” he notes.
Testing notes: “This tinted moisturizer has been my go-to all summer long and I’ll definitely be continuing to wear it into the fall months,” says Glamour’s Kilkeary. “It’s super creamy, easy to blend, and dries down quickly. It keeps my skin feeling soft and hydrated all day, and also stays put without smudging or creasing.”
This hydrating tinted moisturizer has sheer, buildable coverage that helps blur and hide texture from acne. It also contains squalane, meadowfoam seed oil, and rambutan to give skin a healthy glow.
Testing notes: “The first time I tested this formula, I had a major breakout on my chin—I’m talking a huge, cystic pimple. I was unsure that this tinted moisturizer was going to do much in terms of providing coverage for it and I was happily mistaken. Although the formula is sheer at first, you can build it up with a few layers. It creates a smoothing and blurring effect that was actually able to mask the size of the blemish and the inflammation around the area. It kept my skin looking glowy, but not shiny, all day, and I’ll definitely be relying on it more this summer when my skin breaks out again,” says Glamour’s Kilkeary.
Key ingredients: Meadowfoam seed oil, squalane
Size: 1.1 fl. oz.
Coverage: Light to medium
Pros: Creamy formula; smooths uneven skin texture and pimples
Cons: The scent is not great

Licensed esthetician and makeup artist Ivey Rogers personally swears by the Fenty Beauty Eaze Drop Blurring Skin Tint. “I like this one for everyday wear because it blurs the pores of my nose and cheeks yet is super lightweight so I don’t feel like I’m wearing a ton of makeup,” she says.
Testing notes: “This might be my favorite skin tint. It was light but still had full coverage,” says Glamour’s Gathers. “I’ve found that tinted moisturizers can feel oily or greasy, especially with oily-prone skin—but not this one. It was buildable and blended well with my other products and stayed matte the entire time. It didn’t crease at all, even in 80-plus-degree weather. It reminded me of Fenty’s Pro Filter Soft Matte Longwear Foundation (which is my go-to), but less heavy on the skin. It’s perfect for a girls’ night out in the summertime. Another plus? It’s small enough to keep in your purse!”
Key ingredients: Dimethicone, glycerin
Size: 1.08 fl. oz.
Coverage: Light
Pros: Blurs pores; matte finish
Cons: Some reviewers crave more coverage
Best for Mature Skin: Live Tinted Hueguard Skin Tint SPF 50
Tinted moisturizer can be a great option for mature skin concerns, especially if they contain SPF and hydrating ingredients to plump the skin and help minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This skin tint is one of our favorites for this reason— it has SPF 50 mineral sunscreen, which is gentle on skin, plus hyaluronic acid, sea buckthorn oil, and gooseberry for antioxidant protection.
Carolyn Stull, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology in New York City, recommends cult-favorite Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint for dry skin. Marisa Garshick, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology, agrees and adds that the “lightweight tinted moisturizer provides broad-spectrum SPF 40 coverage using zinc oxide, as well as a blend of hyaluronic acid, squalane, and niacinamide to help hydrate and soothe the skin.”
Testing notes: “This skin tint is great if you’re looking for the lightest (and I mean lightest, like no-makeup makeup) of coverage with a high SPF 40,” says Glamour senior West Coast editor Jessica Radloff, who has mature skin. “It does offer quite a glow; you just might have to use a lot more than you thought to get there.”
Formulated with vegan collagen peptides, ceramides for long-lasting hydration, and antioxidant-boosting cactus extract, this antiaging skin tint is a favorite of Glamour’s Kilkeary.
Testing notes: “I could probably go on and on for years about this skin tint, but I’ll try to be concise. The coverage is a beautiful medium to almost full with just a few layers, and it simply glides onto the skin like butter,” says Kilkeary. “It dries really quickly and plays well with lots of other makeup products, everything from concealers to cream blushes. It stays put all day long, too, and keeps the skin hydrated and fresh, without a crease or crack in sight.”
Tower28 SunnyDays SPF tinted sunscreen foundation won the 2022 Glamour Beauty Award for top clean foundation, but since it’s so lightweight, we consider it closer to a tinted moisturizer with SPF. Glamour senior commerce editor Jenifer Calle, who has combination to oily skin, has been using this SPF foundation for years. “If I don’t feel like wearing a ton of makeup, I layer this one with blush and I’m good to go.” Prickly pear and white sage extract in the formula additionally help protect skin from blue light and free radicals, respectively.
Testing notes: “I didn’t expect to fall in love with this, mainly because most tinted sunscreens soak right into my skin and offer no real coverage,” writes Radloff in her review. “If I’m buying something that’s tinted—whether it’s sunscreen or foundation—you’d better believe I want coverage! And this does it perfectly. My skin looks airbrushed and smooth, making it easier to apply bronzer and blush, and it lasts all day. I’m obsessed.”
Key ingredients: SPF, prickly pear extract, aloe vera
Size: 1 fl. oz.
Coverage: Light
Pros: SPF 30; lightweight and absorbs into the skin quickly
Cons: Doesn’t provide a ton of coverage
Best BB Cream: Kosas BB Burst Tinted Gel Cream

Five Glamour editors tried Kosas BB Burst Tinted Gel Cream moisturizer and completely fell in love. The formula is a gel-cream that hydrates skin with ingredients such as collagen-boosting copper peptides, smoothing saccharide isomerate, moisture-retaining sodium PCA, and calming zinc oxide. It comes in an impressive 24-shade range and promises buildable coverage with a smooth and natural finish.
Testing notes: “This BB cream has been a staple in my beauty routine during the warmer months,” says Glamour’s Kilkeary. “It has a creamy texture and dries down into a soft matte finish that’s a bit radiant but not overly shiny. It takes a few layers to get full coverage on acne-prone areas, so I would definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a lighter finish, but it adds a nice plump and glow to the skin overall.”
If you deal with stubborn redness or acne, let us introduce you to this skin tint that helps even out tone and texture. It’s packed with hyaluronic acid, squalane and tiger grass, which works to soothe skin and eliminate red pigment.
Testing notes: “I’ve recently been breaking out on my chin, so I’ve been battling redness and inflammation in the area a ton. This super-soothing skin tint has managed to not only conceal the texture, but it’s evened out the redness and made my skin look more even toned. It’s also a super calming formula and feels ultra hydrating,” says Glamour’s Kilkeary.
With 20 shades, this Laura Mercier moisturizer is a standout in terms of selection. The oil-free blurring pick controls shine, has long-lasting wear, and even provides SPF protection. It helps even out skin tone and texture, too, and does a great job of hiding blemishes and redness.
Testing notes: “I wore this blurring tinted moisturizer in the blaring 80-degree sun of Florida during a recent trip to Disney, and it didn’t smudge, budge, or move throughout the day. It’s really lightweight but easy to build up with a few layers, and I love that it only takes about two layers to get pretty much full coverage. This one is the most foundation-like of the bunch, and I’d definitely recommend using it if you want something to wear for a special occasion but don’t want to commit to a full-coverage beat,” says Glamour’s Kilkeary.
Key ingredients: SPF, French rose clay
Size: 1 fl. oz.
Coverage: Light to medium
Pros: Great shade range; controls excess oil and shine; blurs pores
Cons: Expensive

Saie Slip Tint Sunscreen and Tinted Moisturizer (SPF 35)
Marisa Garshick, MD, board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology in NYC, recommends this Saie Slip Tint sunscreen lotion and tinted moisturizer because it contains hyaluronic acid to hydrate and licorice root to brighten, and it’s easy to apply. Testers love it because it leaves skin dewy and fresh, but not overly oily, making it a great pick if you have combination or sensitive skin.
Testing notes: “If you’re looking for something to wear every day that can address both dryness and oiliness, I love this Slip Tint. It’s really lightweight and hydrating but does a nice job at blurring the skin and giving me a softened, smooth makeup look. It’s one I’ll reach for when I’m spending the day in the sun, thanks to the higher SPF at 35,” says Glamour’s Kilkeary.
Pros: Has sunscreen; blends in easily; weightless finish
Cons: Pricey for the size
Frequently asked questions
How to use and apply a tinted moisturizer
“The best time to apply tinted moisturizer is in the morning after washing your face and applying face serums, if this is part of your routine,” says Dr. Stull. “Those with dryer skin may choose to apply a regular moisturizer prior to tinted moisturizer, although this may not be necessary for oilier skin types. Application of tinted moisturizer can be followed by concealer for extra coverage in particular areas, bronzer, and blush.”
Additional makeup is totally optional, though. “The beauty of tinted moisturizer is that it’s really all you might need, especially on days you don’t want to wear makeup. It’s a great all-in-one,” says Adarsh Vijay Mudgil, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of New York City’s Mudgil Dermatology, who also advises choosing tinted moisturizer with SPF if you’re not wearing sunscreen otherwise.
As for how to apply it? “With your fingertips is actually perfectly fine, though a makeup brush could help provide a more even finish,” says Dr. Mudgil. It’s simply a matter of personal preference.
What the difference between tinted moisturizer and foundation?
As for what differentiates tinted moisturizer from other types of makeup? “Tinted moisturizers offer lighter coverage in comparison with classic foundation preparations,” says Dr. Mudgil. “They are basically a foundation and moisturizer hybrid, which is perfect for days when full-on makeup isn’t needed or desired.”
What's the difference between tinted moisturizer and BB cream?
“Tinted moisturizers are an excellent everyday alternative to foundation, offering lightweight, natural coverage. They effectively even out skin tone, reduce redness, and blur blemishes without feeling heavy,” says Kasey Spickard, an NYC-based celebrity makeup artist. BB creams, on the other hand, may provide a bit more coverage and often have more skin care ingredients, such as SPF, hyaluronic acid and antioxidants, which can protect your skin barrier.
How to apply tinted moisturizer on mature skin and aging skin
For mature skin, Spickard recommends using less product and building up slowly. “Pump one to two pumps of the product onto the back of the hand and, using your ring finger, tap into the product and then apply directly to the face (center of forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin). Then gently use your fingers to buff the product in,” he says. “And remember, less is more!”
Are there any disadvantages to tinted moisturizer?
There are no explicit disadvantages to tinted moisturizer, according to the experts we spoke with. Some may have less coverage compared to your typical foundation, but that can easily be amended by pairing your tinted moisturizer with a good concealer.
