Personal style is at the forefront of the fashion conversation right now, maybe more than ever before—and the biggest fall accessory trends play right into it. Plenty of the most coveted pieces of the season (quirky hats, playful jewelry, doily-like tights) feel special and singular enough to re-energize your look for a new season, even if your everyday dressing is focused on the basics (you can never go wrong with jeans and a tee). No matter what your style journey looks like, we’re willing to bet at least one of the styles below—all of which were major themes on autumn’s runways—will take your wardrobe to the next level. 1. Silver jewelry

While gold jewelry will always be in style, this season consider setting it aside to try an all-silver-tone look. Statement pieces like a long, bold necklace or a pair of structural hoops add a certain dressiness and polish to even the simplest of outfits. Jujuvera’s seashell-shaped necklace has become the runaway hit of the year, but there are plenty of other ways to embrace the trend in a way that fits your personal style.

2. Western redux

The Westernwear look has been sweeping the style scene for several years now. But saddle up, cowgirl, because the look isn’t going anywhere soon. While many brands, like Schaiparelli, Willy Chavarria, and Dsquared2, went all-in on their references—think multilayered belts and 10-gallon hats—you needn’t be too literal to enjoy the look. A gold-and-leather accent, a Western-flavored belt, or a well-placed bandana around the neck or waist should do the trick, especially if you pair it with trendy double denim.

3. Flat boots

Boots for fall, of course, are kind of a no-brainer. But the ones that most align with the fashion zeitgeist have the slimmest soles possible, much like autumn’s trendiest sneakers; Alberta Ferretti showed slightly slouchy stompers juxtaposed with long gowns, while Hermès went for a traditional riding silhouette with the very slightest tread on the bottom. Should you want more of a statement, follow Louis Vuitton’s lead with a shorter shaft; this is also ideal for transitioning your lighter fall dresses into cooler weather.

4. Hats with personality

These days, nothing says you’re serious about style like a silly little chapeau. (Just ask the Copenhagen girls.) There’s a lot of catwalk inspiration to draw from: felt cloches at Miu Miu, tweedy wide-brims at Chanel, leather skullcaps at Sportmax, ’80s-inspired headwear at Vaquera. The general aesthetic is slightly retro, but in a knowing, tongue-in-cheek way. Whether you go for a beret or a newsboy cap, the trick is to integrate it mindfully with the rest of your outfit. An everyday pair of jeans and a white T-shirt can get you by with a simple sailor cap or pillbox hat, but true statement toppers, like striped berets and fur bucket hats, deserve something a little louder. (See our roundup of jacket trends for some outfit inspo.)

5. Lacy tights

The beauty of investing in lingerie-like hosiery is that it rarely costs more than $50 and will instantly transform the look of your dresses and skirts. If you’re feeling bold, test out a colorful pair that nods to recent Gucci styling or go for a white-on-white outfit in the spirit of McQueen; when in doubt, there’s nothing more classic than the sultry black legwear spotted at Balenciaga. Try something similar if you’re looking for a surefire way to revamp your favorite LBD. (Bonus points if you add peep-toe heels.)

6. Objet d’art jewelry

Show your personality this season with a playful statement necklace à la Dries Van Noten, Valentino, and Chanel, or big arts-and-crafts earrings, as seen at Moschino, Armani, and Coach. The overarching vibe? If it has the mood of a summer-camp project, but reads far more sophisticated, you’re on the right path. Start with these energetic picks that’ll liven up gray knits and dark jeans.

7. Nostalgic bags

Fashion month saw a deluge of reissued and reimagined It bags of yore—including the return of the Chloé Paddington, updated Fendi Baguettes, and more than a few styles paying homage to the minimalist hits of Phoebe Philo’s tenure at Celine. If you’re not ready to invest in the luxury versions, though, the market is full of lower-priced pieces that feel like throwbacks in the best possible way. Flirty shoulder silhouettes, architectural crossbodies, and slouchy satchels are all good places to start.

8. Fur touches

According to fashion’s buzziest brands, wearing faux fur is something of a choose-your-own-adventure situation this fall. You can follow Prada’s lead and go ladylike with a plush collar or scarf (which was itself a major theme in the collections) or opt for something more boho and free-spirited, such as the Muppet-like hobo bags at Gucci. And if you really want to make a major impression, consider trying an oversized trapper hat like those from Etro; the style is so irreverently cool contrasted with a long floaty dress.
