The world is at its knees. In the wake of the senseless killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and George Floyd, protestors are demanding justice for Black people who endure systemic racism and police brutality on a daily basis. Global citizens near and far are demonstrating, donating, and educating themselves and others on how to enact real, long-term change in a nation tainted by a grim history of violence, oppression, and disenfranchisement.

Aside from taking to the streets and opening your wallet, arming yourself with knowledge about America's disturbing past and the unique and painful Black experience is key to making a difference. But rather than turn to Black friends and peers to do the educational work for you, allies can look to books about racism to contextualize the overlooked realities of racist structures that permeate institutions in modern American society.
