How we tested

We tested shampoos for frizzy hair by ingredients, application method, and how effective they were at taming our flyaways. We zoomed in on the following criteria:

IngredientsBy ApplicationBy Efficacy
We looked for ultrahydrating ingredients like coconut oil, jojoba oil, glycerin (a humectant), provitamin B5 (panthenol), and more. These all work to hydrate the hair from outside to inside, ensuring that strands stay smooth after each wash.We evaluated how well shampoos lathered and deep-cleaned our strands. We noted which ones washed out easily, left hair smooth after application, and didn’t leave behind any stickiness or residue. The shampoos for frizzy hair that made this list made our hair feel softer, smoother, and less frizzy over the span of a week, within two to three washes.

Olaplex No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo

  • Pros: Gentle on hair; kills frizz all day long
  • Cons: You’ll go through it quickly, so it’s a bit pricey for the size

This smoothing shampoo is gentle on hair and tames curls with ease. It lathers well and has a creamy, thick consistency during washing thanks to a blend of deeply moisturizing ingredients including rosehip and argan and coconut oils.

What our tester says:

“This shampoo has a nice floral scent and a runny, milky consistency that lathers easily. I have fine, curly hair that without proper care is frizzy, especially at the roots, which is where I applied the shampoo. After use, my hair felt very clean, light, and smooth. Shiny too! I was pleased and will keep using this for sure,” says Glamour commerce editor Malia Griggs.

Living Proof No Frizz Shampoo

  • Pros: Promotes smooth hair; suitable for all hair types; gives off a clean feeling
  • Cons: Expensive

“This shampoo features innovative technology that mimics silicone, providing detangling, slip, sleekness, conditioning, and shine—all while using a sunflower-based surfactant. I love this shampoo because it’s effective at taming frizz and has a nice citrus scent,” says Cavalcante.

What our tester says:

“This was the shampoo I was probably most impressed by on this list. It smells nice and sweet, and provides a good lather without being excessively soapy. I think it did a great job at smoothing out my strands (for real, they were quite knotty before I tested this), and I’d definitely recommend it for anyone who wants to revitalize their hair if it’s extra dry or consistently breaking,” says Glamour’s Kilkeary.

  • Cons: Scent is acquired and might smell plasticky to some

Frizzy hair can also be caused by damage. “Heat styling, including the frequent use of a flatiron, can cause breakage,” says Cavalcante. This smoothing shampoo can help reverse this thanks to its minuta olive extract, an ingredient chock-full of fatty acids and vitamin E.

What our tester says:

“After I heat-style my hair a few times, I definitely notice a difference in how frizzy it tends to get,” says Glamour’s Kilkeary. “I’ve been reaching for this shampoo for a few weeks now and love how it’s made my hair look fresher and softer. It smells amazing, too, and is quite lightweight—my thin strands didn’t feel weighed down by the product in the slightest. My hair is always shiny and smooth after using it, even when using hot tools.”

  • Pros: Great for color-treated hair; has a nice lather; hair is smooth after application with little frizz and static
  • Cons: Expensive

Sean Michael, owner of Salon Beau in Andover, Massachusetts, recommends this Oribe shampoo for frizzy hair. “It’s a great choice because it strengthens and nourishes weak strands, helping to repair the root cause of frizz for smoother, healthier hair,” he says. It has a blend of amino acids and a proprietary blend of biotin and plant extracts to gently condition and leave the hair cuticle feeling smooth. It’s also color-safe, which makes it perfect if you often dye your hair, or if you get professional color glosses at the salon.

What our tester says:

“I recently got a color gloss at a salon, and while it looked gorgeous right after my visit, a few days in, my hair started back up with its usual frizz. I reached for this shampoo for a couple of days after that, and almost instantly my hair looked and felt a lot silkier. This one has a dreamy lather and did a great job of keeping my flyaways at bay. Not to mention, it didn’t fade my color gloss—so my hair still looks just as vibrant and smooth as it did after my appointment,” says Glamour’s Kilkeary.

  • Cons: Pricey for the size

If your hair frizzes the instant it hits humidity, let us introduce you to this anti-frizz shampoo that gently cleanses and gets rid of flyaways. It contains Kalahari melon and tamanu seed oils to lock in smoothness and moisture, and will give you soft, shiny, and nonfrizzy strands, even if it’s a humid day.

What our tester says:

“Moving to California solved practically all my frizz problems, but this Aveda anti-frizz shampoo came in clutch while I was in Florida for one of the most humid months of the year. While I wish the formula was sulfate-free to help protect my highlights from fading, the lightweight lather did not irritate my scalp or leaving my hair feeling dry. Most important, my hair definitely felt smoother and easier to manage—even without conditioner,” says Glamour contributor Emily Tannenbaum.

If you deal with a lot of flyaways and static (same), you’ll love this hydrating shampoo that can keep your hair as sleek as velvet. It blends vitamin B5 and sea buckthorn, which has omega fatty acids and is rich in vitamin C and vitamin A. All together, it helps smooth out split ends and keep hair soft and tame.

What our tester says:

“This shampoo lives up to its name and really does make my hair feel like velvet,” says Glamour’s Kilkeary. “I like to use it when my hair is particularly knotty and tangled, and it does a great job of finessing out knots with just one wash (and a little work from my detangling comb). I do find that after I use this product, my hair is less prone to tangling to begin with, and I also have noticed less static generally. This is one I’ll have in my arsenal for months to come, especially when it gets humid.”

What our tester says:

“I really enjoyed this shampoo. It smells really nice, has good slip, and lathers up great,” says Condé Nast content licensing associate Paton Hardy. “I was also impressed by the smell; it lingered on and went well with the typical conditioner I use for a nice fragranced finish.”

OGX Frizz-Free + Keratin Smoothing Oil Shampoo

  • Pros: Affordable; available on Amazon; makes hair feel super smooth but nongreasy
  • Cons: Has fragrance which might irritate sensitive scalps

You may be familiar with an in-salon keratin treatment, in which keratin is applied to the hair to help smooth, straighten and flatten it. This shampoo is basically like a mini version of the regimen that you can get at home, with keratin, argan oil, and ceramide components that help defrizz and make hair more bouncy and resilient.

What our tester says:

“Frizzy hair is something I struggle with because I tend to use a lot of heat on my hair, and this shampoo helped so much with my texture post-styling. It lathers nicely and left my hair feeling extremely clean and smooth, and I didn’t feel the need to have to use additional smoothing products like usual,” says Glamour contributor Sarah Cassuto.

That’s right, this cult-classic shampoo is one of the best for frizzy hair. It’s packed with amino acids and argan oil to hydrate hair after each wash.

What our tester says:

“I’ve probably used this shampoo on and off since high school, and it’s never failed to leave my strands looking glossy and tangle-free. It also has such a nostalgic smell and creates a really nice soapy lather. My split ends simply disappear when I use it; it’s simply an OG,” says Glamour’s Kilkeary.

  • Cons: Not suitable for curl types 3 and 4

Smooth strands don’t have to come at a high price, and this shampoo is proof. It contains hydrating jojoba oil and almond oil to tame hair, from straight to wavy, and comes in a convenient squeeze bottle.

What our tester says:

“I loved the packaging of this smoothing shampoo the first time I tried it because it’s super easy to use and helps you get just the right amount of product. The formula itself is just as nice as its outer shell—it is super silky, coats the hair nicely, and washes out pretty easily. My hair was very staticky and frizzy before I used this, and I almost immediately saw a difference post-wash. As I blow-dried, my hair was velvety soft and easy to run my brush through with no breakage in sight. At $7, this one is a steal,” says Glamour’s Kilkeary.

Frequently asked questions

What triggers frizzy hair?

According to the hairstylists we spoke with, frizzy hair can be triggered by a few factors: excessive dryness, open hair cuticles, and high porosity (meaning the hair has difficulty retaining moisture) combined with humidity. “Too much humidity causes the hair shaft to swell by absorbing moisture, and weaker areas (like at the ends ) react more if the hair is dry, damaged, or curly,” Luis says. When moisture is absorbed unevenly, this leads to frizz. “The hair cuticle (the outermost layer) lifts, making it look rough instead of smooth.”

It’s also key to pay attention to your routine. “Overwashing your hair (no more than every other day) and using too much heat (daily and even weekly) on your hair can lead to frizziness and flyaways,” says Luis.

Does frizzy hair mean your hair is damaged?

According to Michael, frizz isn’t always a sign of damage; instead, it usually means your hair is dehydrated. Things that we associate with damaged hair can cause this dehydration, including frequent heat styling, color treatments, or lack of moisture (i.e., not using a hydrating shampoo, conditioner, leave-in, or oils).

What should you look for when shopping for a shampoo for frizzy hair?

When shopping for an anti-frizz shampoo, hydrating ingredients (such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, or plant butters) are the number one priority. Cavalcante recommends amino acids (e.g., lactic acid), as they will help seal the cuticle. Luis also says to look for hydrating oils, like argan oil, shea butter, and coconut oil.

Are shampoos or conditioners better for taming frizzy hair?

While conditioners, leave-in conditioners, or hair masks can often tame flyways quite well, using the wrong shampoo can actually lead to more frizz because it can strip your hair of too much moisture. Thats why anti-frizz shampoos are an important step in the quest for softer, smoother hair, especially if you deal with frizz in the midlengths to the top of your hair shaft.

Is coconut oil good for frizzy hair?

“Coconut oil can be good depending on your hair type,” says Michael. If you have coarse or thick hair, it can help add moisture and smoothness back in, but for fine hair types, it can feel heavy and make your hair greasy. “If you use coconut oil, apply it only to the midlengths and ends, not the scalp, to avoid clogging pores or weighing your hair down,” he says.

Does your hair get frizzier as you age?

According to celebrity hairstylist Annagjid “Kee” Taylor, it is possible for your hair to get frizzier as the years pass. “As we age, our hair tends to lose moisture and elasticity, which makes it more porous, and more porous hair frizzes faster. That’s why consistent hydration and gentle care become even more important over time,” she says. Thinning hair can result in frizzy hair, too, which is why incorporating a hair-growth product into your hair care routine can also be beneficial.

Is there any way to stop hair from frizzing?

While there’s no way to stop your hair from frizzing for good, there are steps you can take to mitigate frizziness. “Start with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, and always follow with a leave-in or smoothing cream—I like Fenty Hair the Water Boi Reparative Leave-In Detangling Conditioner Spray for lightweight slip,” says Taylor. Next, use a microfiber towel to blot your hair dry (instead of rubbing it). Sealing the hair with a heat protectant, hair oil, or hair serum will also make a huge difference, she says.
