We’re continually evaluating new and noteworthy silk sheets to make sure our recommendations stay up-to-date. Since our last update in February, we’ve tested dozens of sheet sets—including a few new silk options—to see how they hold up in real life.
Unlike other brands that test in labs, we actually sent over a dozen top-reviewed silk sheet sets home with six Glamour staffers and contributors who put them through nearly a year of in-home use. That meant real sleep, real washing, and real feedback on comfort, durability, and ease of care. Every silk sheet set included here was tested by at least one staff member, with some reviewed by multiple testers. If you’re looking for 22-momme silk, this one is a good value.
“Lying down in these sheets feels like sleeping on a cloud. They’re so soft to the touch and, for lack of a better term, silky,” says Lauren Brown, Glamour’s creative visuals director, who raves that they gave her the most luxurious night’s sleep she’s experienced. “The tan was subtle and looked gorgeous in my room. The quality is so high that they’re super easy to launder too. After washing, they really held up perfectly in terms of quality and feel. I have been sleeping with a silk pillowcase for years to protect my curls, so there was no change there—but I do think there’s been a benefit for my skin, since I seem to wake up less oily. Hoping to get a similar feel to silk and spend less than $50? Bedsure’s satin sheet set is your best bet. “These sheets are slippery, cool to the touch, and thin,” Glamour’s Brown says. Ideal for those new to silk or shopping on a budget, Lilysilk’s 19-momme silk fitted sheet is a solid entry-level option because of its price point. Its lighter weight but is still soft and breathable feel, helping to regulate temperature and minimize hair frizz and preserve hairstyles during sleep. If you fall in love with it, you can always expand your set with matching flat sheet, pillowcases, duvet cover, and more, since the brand offers everything à la carte.
We found that these sheets hold up surprisingly well against wrinkles (a common problem with silk sheets), though they do tend to lose a bit of their sheen and develop minor stains over time. Even so, testers were impressed with how soft they stayed—even after months of use. Testers noticed real benefits too. “I just blow-dried my hair the night before, and it managed to stay bouncy in the morning! Also, my neck didn’t sweat in the middle of the night—that’s a huge pro,” says Glamour social video editor Yanise Cabrera, who has curly hair.
“Of all the cheaper silk sheets I tested, this one gets the least wrinkled and helped preserve my hair overnight,” says Brie Schwartz, Glamour’s director of commerce. “However, after about six months of use, it did start to get more wrinkled after washes, and it has begun to lose its sheen and accrue some stains. “The sheets are extremely soft right out of the box and even after washing; they were easy to clean with other sheets and held up fine. Once you lie on the sheets, they feel slippery and cool to the touch,” says Glamour senior commerce editor Jenifer Calle, who says they’re also ideal for hot sleepers. “My thick, wavy hair wasn’t as frizzy as usual each morning.”
While Calle thought the texture made it tough to sleep with a partner, Glamour executive assistant Monique Wilson called it “not too slippery” and “smooth, but in a good way. Cleaning was easy—I used the delicate setting on my washer, which helped the sheets hold up well. Stains come out with a wash but still have faint visibility. “While there could be a bit more silk in the mix for the price, I still believe this set offers great value. On top of offering a luxurious feel, it’s packaged very nicely—it essentially arrives in a gift box,” Smith says. “It’s as cool to the touch as the real stuff, which is a temperature-regulating godsend for hot sleepers like me. The fitted sheet’s deep pockets are a little too big for my mattress, meaning they’re more likely to slip out when you’re shifting in bed. The material is just as wrinkle-prone as full silk, but it’s incredibly easy to steam to return it to normal; it relaxed so much more quickly than the modal and cotton sheets I’ve tested. It strikes me as a little odd that there’s no wide seam at the top of the flat sheet to denote placement. But this might end up being a plus if the top sheet starts to stain or pill. “I immediately noticed that Luxome’s sheets were a little warmer and ever so slightly rougher than real silk, so this is not the right pick for anyone who wants the coolest or slipperiest sheets on the market. I actually prefer sheets with a little more friction than silk, so this bamboo was just right for me,” Glamour’s Smith says. “But the downsides stopped there. I tested these in the middle of a cold, and the impressive moisture-wicking and smooth texture came in handy for night sweats and fitful sleep. The benefits of silk sheets are that they’re gentle on skin and hair while also offering cooling, breathable comfort. “Silk is a natural material that is breathable and soft,” says Kseniya Kobets, MD, director of cosmetics dermatology at Montefiore Einstein Advanced Care. “It offers less friction and more coolness than cotton or rougher fabrics, so it’s a good choice for those with sensitive skin and eczema, while decreasing wrinkles and reducing hair frizz and hair breakage.”
In addition to beauty benefits, silk is also considered hypoallergenic. It naturally resists mold, fungus, dust mites, and other allergens. Research backs this up: A small 2019 study found that silk clothing was linked to a “significant decrease” in symptoms among adults with atopic dermatitis, a chronic skin condition that causes dry, itchy, and inflamed skin.
Are silk sheets worth it?
Silk sheets are worth it, because they deliver real skin and hair benefits while also feeling luxurious and comfortable. Compared with a silk pillowcase (which you can find for under $30), silk sheets are a much bigger investment since they require so much more fabric. We’ve found that 100% silk sets usually start around $500 and can climb to more than $1,000 depending on size, design, and quality. Silk blends start closer to $200, viscose around $100, and polyester satin as low as $25. These alternatives can offer similar beauty benefits, though the effects may be less dramatic than with pure silk.
There’s no denying silk sheets are pricey—and they typically last about five years or less. (Dr. Kobets even recommends replacing sheets as often as every 18 months.) Still, they can be a game changer for anyone with frizzy hair, dry or acne-prone skin, or particularly sensitive skin. Our testers noticed genuine improvements in both skin and hair over time. If you’re on the fence, think about it in terms of cost per use. Because you spend so much of your life in bed, silk sheets may actually end up costing just pennies per night.
Are there any disadvantages to silk sheets?
The biggest disadvantage to silk sheets is that they require more maintenance than other types of bedding. They’re prone to staining and wrinkle easily after laundering, and frequent washing can dull silk’s natural luster. Even with proper care, most sets last no more than five years before needing to be replaced.
What is momme count?
Momme count is a measure of silk’s weight and density, which directly affects its quality and durability. It’s similar to thread count in cotton—the higher the momme, the denser and more luxurious the fabric (and usually the higher the price).
Silk sheets typically range from 19 momme—lightweight and ideal for beginners—to 25 momme, which feels smoother and more durable. Premium options can go up to 30 momme. Fabric type also matters. Mulberry silk, made from silkworms that eat only mulberry leaves, is considered the highest quality, thanks to its long, uniform fibers that create a stronger, longer-lasting fabric.
Is 25 momme better than other types of silk?
Yes, 25 momme is considered better than lower momme counts, since it’s denser, smoother, and more durable. Many even consider 25 momme the gold standard, since it offers the best balance between quality and price before differences become harder to notice.
That said, our testers were impressed by the 22-momme silk sheets we tried, including Quince’s top-rated set. For most people, the difference between 22 and 25 momme isn’t significant enough to justify spending more.
