Charli XCX’s Baby Tee Sent a Not-So-Subtle Message to Critics

She wore it the day before her album dropped, of course.

The night before her newest album, Crash, debuted to near-universal acclaim, Charli XCX took a victory lap on the streets of London. Her Y2K-influenced outfit sent a silent, cheeky message to her detractors—and it was heard loud and clear by her Angels on social media.

On her way to dinner, the “New Shapes” musician was spotted wearing a printed baby tee from the brand Praying—an exclusive for the fashion retailer Ssense—emblazoned with the phrase “They don’t build statues of critics.” Against her simple outfit of black leather pants, square-toe boots, sporty shades, and a JW Anderson bag, Charli’s DGAF T-shirt pops even more.

“Oooops I ate,” the singer wrote on her Instagram Stories over paparazzi photos of her and her shirt. “Don’t talk to me, my album’s about to drop.”

Celebrities using clothing to send a message is nothing new. On Charli XCX, the graphic tee is both earnest and ironic—a fitting final statement before her record hit streaming services.
