We’ve gone into great depth about the benefits of at-home light therapy many a time before, so if you’re wondering “what is light therapy?”, you won’t be left with a lack of information. In short, it’s the process of exposing your skin to colors of LED light—be it red, yellow or blue; each color stimulates a different response in your skin when that light is absorbed.
The Series 2 mask is embedded with 236 LED bulbs, which emit three clinically recognised wavelengths: red (633 nm), near-infrared (830 nm) and new deep near-infrared (1,072 nm).
“We know that red light at a wavelength of 633 nanometers can help collagen stimulation, wound healing, reduction in inflammation, and reduction of redness,” Dr. Belkin tells me. “We also know that infrared light, at 830 nm, also causes collagen stimulation and reduction in signs of photoaging, which includes wrinkles laxity and hyperpigmentation. So it’s really important, if I am recommending a device, that I know that the LED lights are extremely precise in those particular wavelengths. And I know that to be true with CurrentBody device.”
As for the wavelengths themselves, the CurrentBody mask uses only clinically proven wavelengths (the same as professional salon machines) to reach up to 4 cm of skin tissue and stimulate the cells from within. “They use wave lengths of light that are evidence-based, and the LED emits a very precise band of light in that wavelength,” Dr. Belkin says. “Studies that they have done show that their LED lights are extremely precise compared with other LED devices that are on the market.”
It’s also worth noting that each of the wavelengths are diffused with patented pillow technology, which enhances the efficacy and distribution of high-quality LED wavelengths to ensure complete and evenly distributed skin coverage. “The LED is set back in a silicone casing,” Dr. Belkin says, “which allows for the diffusion of light over the whole portion of skin that you’re treating.”
“Many of them [other masks] have pinpoint LED lights that will only target the areas they’re actually being shone on. And this is what you would get in a less-expensive or cheaper device. CurrentBody’s is a really high quality device,” which allows skin cells to effectively absorb the maximum amount of light energy for the best results.

Unboxing & design
The LED face mask comes in a sleek white box with everything you need to reap the benefits of light therapy, safely, at home. The first thing I noticed when I unboxed the mask is that it is flat when unused (perfect for stowing away in your suitcase) and that it extends to cover your chin—which the first iteration didn't.
According to instructions, you should cleanse and dry your skin before use. So before every treatment, I will remove dirt, makeup, and oil with my favorite products, then dry my face with a bath towel and place the mask onto my face.
Let’s start with the way it fits. This face mask, made from cutting-edge poured liquid silicone, is so much more comfortable than its predecessor was. When I reviewed the Series 1, I noted that I had to use a claw clip to keep the mask in place, and that it hurt a little bit after 10 minutes of use. Now the multiway straps can be adjusted to all head shapes and ensure the mask stays put comfortably. Plus, the fact that the mask stretches around your head and under your chin makes for a more holistic experience.
I found the whole thing very easy to set up: You get a little remote control that comes attached to the mask, and you can turn the (fully charged) mask on with the touch of a button. One 10-minute treatment is all that’s needed for this face mask to work. I loved that using this mask for 10 minutes of an evening (it automatically switches off after that) was a real self-care moment; it quickly became my favorite step of my skin care routine.
The science behind light therapy
I won’t get too technical for too long, but bear with me for a moment if you want to know how the mask actually works.
Impressively, with this new edition, CurrentBody has maintained the two gold-standard wavelengths used in the Series 1 mask—red (633 nm) and near-infrared (830 nm)—but has added deep near-infrared (1072 nm), which is proven to be highly effective in cellular renewal in targeted areas. This means that the mask now has 236 LEDs versus 132 LEDs. But of course, it’s not all about the number of LEDs. Rather, the quality matters.
“To ensure the LEDs in our Series 2 Mask deliver the most powerful antiaging benefits, we developed state-of-the-art testing equipment,” CurrentBody says. “This system measures the precision of thousands of individual LEDs, and only a small, highly precise selection makes it into our masks.

How often can you use the CurrentBody LED face mask?
You should use the CurrentBody LED face mask three to five times a week, for 10 minutes at a time. This is an optimized treatment time that reflects the power output and the precision of the mask, and when its used as advised, CurrentBody states that their mask is proven to be “at least 31% more powerful and effective than any other at-home red and near infrared LED mask on the market.”
It’s worth noting that using it for more than the recommended amount of time will not boost your results.
How quickly will I see results?
You can expect to see visible results in just four weeks when used consistently 10 minutes a day, three to five times per week. Although the mask is effective on its own, CurrentBody says you will achieve the best results when its used with the CurrentBody Skin Hydrogel Face Masks or CurrentBody Skin Green Tea Serum. I did not test the mask with these products, so I can’t vouch for their efficacy.
Is the CurrentBody LED face mask worth it?
In my opinion, the CurrentBody LED face mask Series 2 is the best choice you can make—and wonderfully, really great value for money.
The results of LED light therapy are cumulative. I can’t stress enough that you shouldn’t expect to see immediate changes to your complexion—and you should be consistent with your treatments. If you are, however, and your skin reacts in the same way as mine, I am confident you should start to see an improvement after a couple of weeks. At the end of week one, I started to see that my skin felt plumper and brighter after each treatment. And after week two, I noticed that my skin texture was beginning to improve. The telltale sign for me was that my makeup seemed to glide on with so much more ease–something that seemed to continue to get better with time.
While I can’t vouch for the impact it would have on wrinkles—I have young skin, but hope regular use will prevent premature aging—the reduction in spots I experienced in the week prior to my period was something quite extraordinary. For me, it’s reason enough alone to continue using it. After using the CurrentBody Skin LED face mask three times a week for for four weeks, I really did notice my skin to be brighter, less tired-looking, and significantly clearer of blemishes. I also found that, as with my makeup, my skin care now absorbs into my skin better. From my overnight masks to my hydrating serums, everything just seems to sink in.
Many other masks come in at more than $450. Case in point: The Light Salon’s Advanced Light Therapy Mask or the $1,700 (!) Déesse Professional LED Mask. Both great, but both expensive. The CurrentBody mask costs $469, making it one of the most affordable on the market, yet one of the most powerful.
Granted, this is the first time I have used an LED mask, but my skin has never looked better. My complexion feels clearer, brighter, and plumper, and my hormonal breakouts have been minimised. It feels like a great complimentary step to everything else in my skin care routine, and an inability to stay put on my head won’t stop me from reaping the benefits.

You can choose from the zone-facial-mapping treatment mode, antiaging, brightening or restoring, but the complete zone-facial-mapping treatment mode is the one that really makes this mask stand out. Different zones target different areas of your face, through different wavelengths of light. Red, deep red, and near-infrared light are emitted around the forehead, the jowls, and around the mouth to plump and press fine lines. Elsewhere, green and near-infrared target the eye area to fade hyperpigmentation, dark circles, and eye bags. Yellow focuses on the most spot-prone areas of the face to help reduce facial redness—your cheeks, nose, and chin, for instance.
It’s also worth mentioning that as with the original, the 360 LED bulbs are diffused with patented pillow technology for complete skin coverage. This basically means that you receive even coverage across the skin’s surface, with no gaps left.
Again, harnessing the same technology as the CurrentBody LED face mask, this is a first-of-its kind antiaging LED lip device.
