ORIGINAL STORY—March 10, 2020: We didn't think it was possible for a hair-dryer to break the internet, but when the Dyson Supersonic came onto the scene in 2016, it did exactly that. While the dryer initially made headlines because of its $500 price tag, it garnered a loyal following thanks to its ability to blow out even the thickest of hair in half the time. The brand had similar success with last year's Airwrap, and today it launches the Dyson Corrale, the appliance company's first flatiron.
As with its other two hits, Dyson set out to rethink the traditional styling tool. Think shiny, sleek results in fewer passes with less heat damage and no fried-hair smell. This is thanks in part to the iron's "flexible plates," which move with your hair instead of smooshing and tugging at it, so flyways, frizz, and long-term damage are reduced. Inside the plates is Dyson's Intelligent Heat Control, which monitors the heat of your hair 100 times a second to make sure it's the temperature you selected all the way down the strand.
A few other notable function: The straightener is cordless, so you don't have to worry about knocking all your products off the sink when you're in a hurry, and the outside of the flatiron stays cool to the touch—a bonus if you straighten your hair while traveling or at the gym, since you can just throw it back in your bag without worries. There's also a lock button that keeps it compact when you store it.
But all that innovation comes at a cost, and at $499, the Dyson Corrale isn't exactly cheap. So is it worth it? We had four Glamour staffers with different hair types put it to the test. Read on for our honest thoughts.

I don't style my hair very often, so I don't have a ton of experience to compare this guy with. That being said, the major thing that stood out to me was how my hair didn't smoke at all when I glided the iron through. It made my hair stick straight in just one pass, which is fairly typical since it's thin and naturally on the straighter side of wavy, but it didn't feel crispy or dry. Despite it being a little clunkier than your average flatiron, I also found it incredibly easy to use as a waver because it's cordless, which is promising since I'm usually hopeless. The Dyson hair-dryer leaves my hair fairly straight as is, so I probably wouldn't get too much extra use from this, but if you're someone who uses a flatiron every day and are worried about damage, I think it's definitely worth the investment.

I've buried more flatirons in my day than I care to remember, and it takes a lot for me to get hyped over a hair tool. I'm obsessed with keeping my natural hair in tip-top shape, and for a while I swore off heat tools altogether. But after trying this, I'm happy to know I don't have to sacrifice health for #hairgoals. Don't let the steep price tag scare you—it's worth it if you can swing it. I was able to straighten my hair in its natural state after just one (!!!) pass, for me. That's bananas. I'm used to doing three-plus passes over the same piece of hair until smoke damn near fills the room, but there was minimal steam and no fried-hair smell when I tried this baby out. The finished results were pretty close to blowout-bar-level, but in a fraction of the time (and at a fraction of the cost, TBH). Color me impressed.

This flatiron works faster than the model I've been using for years, which is a welcome improvement. My hair is on the wavier side, with some true curls underneath, and the Corrale got it straight and sleek in about five minutes flat. I’m always careful to avoid heat damage, and I didn’t feel like my ends suffered, and like the other testers said, there was no smoke. The price point is on the higher side for me, personally, but when my current iron gives out, I could see myself making the jump.

Straightening my curly hair has always been a process—and limiting where I can stand (or sit) for that very long 45-minute period only gives me one more excuse to put it off. So I'd pretty much all but given up on wearing it straight. But the Corrale takes the nuisance (i.e., the cord) out of this activity completely. With just one or two passes, my hair was pin-straight and soft to the touch. Seriously, that never happens.
