Elle Fanning’s Formal Pigtails Are the Ultimate Party-Season Updo

If you had asked me what I thought of pigtails as a formal updo before seeing Elle Fanning at the premiere of A Complete Unknown on December 10, I would have been one hundred percent against the idea. After seeing Elle Fanning at the premiere of the new Bob Dylan biopic, however, it’s another story.

To go with her white Gucci slip dress, with crystal spaghetti straps and girly bow detail, Fanning wore her hair in a voluminous pigtail style that looks time-warped right from the 1960s.

Fanning’s side-swept bangs frame her face, while a teased portion at the top, secured with a crystal-embellished bow barrette to match the dress, gives the whole look a lift. The ponytails themselves were also bedazzled with matching crystal-beaded hair-ties.

The style is reminiscent of ’60s-style icons like Brigitte Bardot or Audrey Hepburn, who wore a similar style of pigtails in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Paired with the sleek column dress and dramatic cat-eye makeup, the entire look transports you back to the mid-century, which is, of course, when A Complete Unknown is set. In the movie, Elle Fanning plays Sylvie Russo, a character based on the real-life Bob Dylan’s (played in the film by Timothée Chalamet) girlfriend in the early ’60s.
