Following on the heels of Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman and Brie Larson's Captain Marvel, another female-led superhero movie will make its way to movie theaters in May 2020: Black Widow. Scarlett Johansson's character has been a staple in the Avengers films—and if you saw Avengers: Endgame, then you know exactly how important she is to the team. Now she's getting her very own stand-alone movie.
The first trailer dropped today, December 3, giving us more insight into the plot. In it we see Johansson's Natasha Romanoff heading home to her native Russia and reconnecting with her family, including her sister Yelena (played by Little Women star Florence Pugh), her mother (Rachel Weisz), and her father (David Harbour), who is Russia's version of Captain America, the Red Guardian. “I’ve lived a lot of lives, but I’m done running from my past,” Johansson says in the clip. The fam has to work together to fight the film's big bad, a villain known as The Taskmaster.
If you're a little confused by the timeline, you're not alone—but the events of Black Widow are meant to take place after Captain America: Civil War, when the Avengers split off and went out on their own before rejoining forces in Avengers: Infinity War. “Where we find Natasha in her life at this point is very specific,” Johansson previously told Entertainment Weekly. “She really is in a dark place where she’s got no one to call and nowhere to go. She’s really grappling with her own self. When something huge explodes and all the pieces are landing, you have that moment of stillness where you don’t know what to do next—that’s the moment that she’s in. In that moment, you actually have to face yourself.”
The film, which is directed by Cate Shortland, has been a long time coming. Black Widow was first introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2010's Iron Man, and fans have been clamoring for more of the superhero ever since. But Johansson thinks the timing is just right. “I don’t think I could have played this version of Natasha 10 years ago,” she said at Comic-Con this summer, per People. “I get to play her as a fully realized woman. I’m looking to wipe out some of the red from my ledger.”
Regardless of the timing, Marvel fans were pleased with the first look at the movie.
