Rumor has it that upon meeting Jasmine Tookes for the first time, Oprah herself was taken by how beautiful her skin is. (“Your skin is so soft, it's like butter!” was her exact statement, according to Page Six.) While I haven’t felt it myself, just a scroll through the 30-year-old model’s Instagram confirms that it’s pretty flawless.
While sure, she has great genes, Tookes certainly knows her stuff when it comes to products. Which makes it no surprise that she recently landed a job as Hourglass Cosmetics’ new skin-care ambassador. “I think it’s kind of nice if you splurge on yourself and on your skin,” she tells Glamour. “It’s the first thing people see, and you always want your makeup to look good. And if your skin looks good, your makeup looks good. I’m not afraid to splurge on skin care, but I also know there are some great products out there that are much more affordable.”
While she’s always in search of dewy, plump, skin, she has specially tailored her routine to fight hyperpigmentation. “Because I have dark skin, it’s very easy for me to get dark spots,” she says. “Even if it’s the smallest little bump on my face, it will immediately turn into a dark spot that takes quite some time to get rid of. I’m always looking for products that can help diminish those spots and prevent them from getting darker.”
For our latest Drop the Routine column, Tookes breaks down the dark-spot-busters she’s obsessed with, the essence she swears by for plump skin, and the only SPF she’s ever loved.
My Cleanser
I’ve been using the Hourglass Equilibrium Cleanser, and I’m obsessed with the texture. It’s super rich and creamy, and it makes my skin feel really calm. I feel like it doesn’t strip my skin of its natural oils, which is great. I find with a lot of other cleansers that my face feels so dry after I use them. So I love that my skin feels nice and hydrated and plump with this one.
My Essence
I use the Hourglass Equilibrium Restoring Essence, both day and night. Again, it really makes my skin feel plump, which is something I look for in any product, and it adds a nice hydration to my skin. It really, really helps when my skin is extra dry—like when I get off of a plane, it’s the perfect thing to put on.
My Serum
I like to try different serums here and there. I’ll love a vitamin-C serum—I have a few different brands that I use for that. And then I swear by the La Mer Regenerating Serum, which I’ve used forever. It makes my skin feel so nice and moist, right under my moisturizer.
My Moisturizers
For my moisturizer, I kind of bounce around depending on what makeup I’m doing. Like if I’m doing a nighttime look, I’ll use a thicker, rich cream like La Mer. I’ve also really been loving Augustinus Bader for day; it’s a little bit lighter.
My Eye Cream
I’m obsessed with the Hourglass Hydrating Eye Balm. It’s so amazing; the texture is like heaven. I take it everywhere with me. It’s like my little secret. If I have dark circles, I apply it and it immediately makes me look fresh and awake and rehydrated.
My Face Masks
I use face masks from time to time. I like them when I’m getting ready for an event. I’ll throw one on just to get that extra boost of hydration, but I’m not always grabbing for one. I like a Korean face mask, the Lipo Wrap ones are my favorite.
My Dark Spot Treatment
I have a dermatologist, Dr. Pearl Grimes, that I see in L.A. for my hyperpigmentation, and she has her own products. I love her spot treatment. It has hydroquinone in it, and it’s on the stronger side, so I only use it when when my dark spots are really bad.
My Face Oils
I have so many face oils that I love! I love the La Mer Face Oil. Another one of my favorites is from my dear friend Miranda Kerr’s line: Kora Organics Noni Glow Oil. I use that one everywhere. I love that it’s super clean. And I’ve also been using the Augustinus Bader Face Oil.
If I’m not wearing makeup in the morning, I like to wear face oil because I feel like it gives you that glow and makes it look like you have a little something on, even if it’s just on your cheekbones. And then at night I always apply it. I know a lot of people don’t love face oil, but I really feel like it benefits my skin and makes it feel nice and hydrated.
My Exfoliator
I use the Kora Organics Turmeric Face Mask. You can use it as a mask or a gentle exfoliant—I really, really love it. It’s very exfoliating and has a cooling sensation when you put it on your skin.
My Face Mist
I love the May Lindstrom Jasmine Garden Botanical Face Mist. It smells so good. Sometimes I’ll just spray it all over so I can get the smell.
My SPF
For sunscreen I use the Hourglass Equilibrium Day Fluid SPF. I’ve been using it for quite some time now, and I love it. I had the hardest time finding a sunscreen I can actually wear everyday that doesn’t leave a different color cast on my skin, so I really like that this one is thin. I can put it on under my makeup, and my makeup sits perfectly thoughout the day. It also really helps to fight my uneven skin tone, which I love. So it’s not only a sunblock, but it’s also benefiting my skin. I wear this every day. You’ll never catch me without it.
My Lip Balm
I love Dr. Pawpaw Lip Balm. I have one in every purse in my closet.
My Tools and Treatments
I just started using this Georgia Louise Hollywood EGF tool. It’s an at-home microneedling device. I love using it before I apply my other products since it really helps them sink in, and you see results much quicker versus putting them on your skin without the microneedling. I’ll do that about once a week and focus a lot on my dark spots.
I also use the Dr. Dennis Gross LED Mask and love it. Whenever I use it at night, I feel like my skin is tighter. I also love that it helps to fight wrinkles.
I don’t see a facialist regularly, but from time to time, if I feel like pampering myself, I’ll see Shani Darden in L.A. If my hyperpigmentation is really bad and I want to do some resurfacing, I’ll do a laser treatment with Dr. Simon Ourian. That’s a once a year thing!
