For as much as we look forward to red-carpet season, the looks are fairly predictable. Sure, a few celebrities might push the boundaries with ornate hair accessories or lime green eyeshadow, but most fall squarely in the camp of classically pretty. This, however, is never the case with the Met Gala. You're just as likely to see someone with a towering nativity scene (ahem, SJP) on their head as you are hand-cut metallic foil eyelashes (see Lady Gaga at this year's 2019 Met Ball). The evening is so known for its elaborate looks that it's been given the nickname Fashion Prom.
It's also the unofficial anniversary for dozens of celebrities' makeovers. If you're not going to go punk or platinum blond for Anna Wintour, then who? In 2016, Taylor Swift debuted her now iconic Reputation blond, and Anne Hathaway went nearly bright white in 2013. And this year there wasn't just one hair change that had us doing a double take, there were several.
But there was a common thread. Brunette after brunette ditched their natural hair for platinum blond. While they were mostly wearing wigs—perfectly in line with the Camp theme—it just goes to show there's no better night to make a big change than the first Monday of May. Here's who made the platinum plunge—at least for the evening.
Mindy Kaling
We almost never see Mindy Kaling break away from her dark hair (aside from an April Fool's joke earlier this year), so it was definitely a fun twist to see this new lighter side of her. We love the super-glam length as well.
Kasey Musgraves
The country singer's long black hair is central to her beauty look, so you can imagine the shock it brought to stans to see her with this bright blond. Unsurprisingly, it suits her perfectly, and we are living for this head-to-toe Barbie lewk. In order to get perfect doll waves, her hairstylist Giovanni Delgado prepped her wig with Davines Melu Shield and Your Hair Assistant Blowdry Primer before blowing it dry with a T3 Cura Luxe Hair Dryer. He then used a T3 wand to curl the hair, and brushed it out for the finished look.
Kris Jenner
It's a little bit jarring to see the world's most iconic momager without her signature black pixie, but this blond bob is working for her. According to Kris, she was channeling '80s David Bowie, but the hair choice was made by one of 2019's most important pop figures, Kylie Jenner. Kris told E! that Kylie decided she should go blond mere hours before the red carpet. Good call, Kylie.
Tiffany Haddish
It's not easy to make a sequined, feathered fedora look cool, but leave it to Tiffany to pull it off—along with these bouncy blond curls.
