I’ve never been fond of foundation, since my sensitive, acne-prone skin tends to break out whenever I pile on too much product. Enter L’Oréal Lumi Glotion Natural Glow Enhancer, a foundation alternative that’s become a staple in my minimalist beauty routine.
My biggest flex is that since 2018 I’ve owned—and loved—this now viral product, and I have no plans to retire it any time soon. I’m always looking for more lightweight alternatives to help me achieve that so-called lit-from-within glow sans any irritation or clogged pores, and nothing has beaten out this one.
But TikTok found out my best-kept secret; the hybrid formula skyrocketed to fame a few months ago and has racked up 12,000 Amazon reviews (and counting). Part of the appeal might be that the Lumi Glotion is a cross between a liquid highlighter and a tinted moisturizer. But unlike a traditional highlighter, Lumi Glotion isn’t sparkly or glittery; instead it offers a more understated shimmer, making it easy to achieve a subtle sheen that’s right on trend with the no-makeup makeup look.
The result? An easy, natural-looking glow in a matter of seconds. I especially love the hydrating, water-based formula, which feels weightless on my skin. It’s even packed with editor- and expert-loved skin-care ingredients, such as glycerin (a moisture-boosting humectant) and nourishing shea butter. Plus, since the texture is so light, it can be easily layered over or under your favorite makeup products; use Lumi Glotion as a primer to ensure the rest of your makeup applies smoothly and stays put, or dab it onto cheekbones and brow bones for a subtle highlight over makeup.
Although the formula is sheer—and therefore offers minimal coverage—it instantly brightens my complexion, thanks to the light-reflecting pigments in its formula. (It won’t mask acne, redness, or dark circles on its own, so you might want to pair it with other makeup products.) When I use it on its own as a tinted moisturizer, I spot-treat by following it with a full-coverage concealer, especially if I have a Zoom meeting, bottomless-brunch reservation, or any other special occasion.
While you can definitely use a brush to buff out the tinted moisturizer, I find that applying it with my fingers makes it easier to achieve a more natural look. This also offers more control, especially when it comes to building and blending. For everyday wear, I usually squeeze out two pea-size amounts (one for each side of my face) to use as a highlighter along my cheeks for an effortless contour. Sometimes I’ll even dab some on the tip of my nose, my brow bones, my cupid’s bow, and the corner of my eyes for extra luminosity.
While I love my L’Oréal Lumi Glotion, it’s worth noting that the product only has four shade options. Ideal, no, but the formula is so sheer that it doesn’t require an exact match the way a traditional foundation would. Go and see the glow for yourself; it really does live up to the hype.
