Margot Robbie is ushering in a new wavy hair trend—and it’s a total departure from the smooth-and-sculpted Hollywood waves that have taken over red carpets recently. The actor appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on January 26 to promote her upcoming film Wuthering Heights, and her look was pure dark romance.
Robbie wore a sheer black lace Alexander McQueen dress with a short hem, bell sleeves, and high neckline, but her hairstyle stole the spotlight. She wore extra-long waves in a half-up style with face-framing pieces pulled out—a windswept homage to the Yorkshire moors of Wuthering Heights. Much like director Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of the classic novel, Robbie’s hairstyle mixes period nostalgia with a modern edge.
While there’s been a surge in vintage hair trends among celebrities lately, this latest look from Margot Robbie stands out. Rather than the brushed-out, polished, and uniform marcel waves that go into Selena Gomez’s go-to Old Hollywood bobs, Robbie’s waves give more of a crimped or just-braided effect.
Robbie’s go-to stylist Bryce Scarlett shared a closer look at her waist-grazing waves on Instagram, this time paired with a ruby statement choker and a different black long-sleeve dress. Close-up, we can see that they follow the same S-curl pattern as Hollywood waves (on much smaller sections), but each wave remains defined and unblended. The loose, unstructured styling leans into the hair’s natural texture.

Feeling inspired to try out a dark romantic hairstyle? The good news is that unlike silver-screen waves, this look is actually improved by a few imperfections. Try sleeping with slightly damp hair in two French braids, then use a 1-inch curling iron to refine your pieces. You can also opt for a three-barrel waving tool to speed up the process.
To mimic that beachy cliffside texture, hit your waves with a sea salt texture spray and a good scrunch before locking them in with hairspray. If you have naturally wavy hair, a texturizing air-dry balm can give you the perfect base for styling.
If you’re copying Robbie’s look exactly, pull your top layer back loosely (with the option to twist it on either side for a fairytale feel), and secure your half-up style with no-show bobby pins at the nape of your neck. For a more modern take, see the mid-length, free-hanging crimps (also courtesy of Scarlett) Robbie wore for her Vogue Australia February 2026 cover.
