Margot Robbie Proves Thigh-High Stockings Aren’t Just for Victorian Costumes

They also have a lot in common with the indie sleaze era.

Margot Robbie’s red thigh-high stockings are more than just a nod to the Victorian boudoir—though that element is definitely present. They may also be trendier than you think, so you might want to start taking notes.

At a “Wuthering Heights” photo call in London on February 4, Robbie kept to the method dressing she’s been embracing this entire press tour. This time, she took a lingerie-inspired approach to her look. She had a long jacket in patterned green velvet, with corseting details at the waist and furry pink epaulettes, worn mostly open like a dressing gown. Under that, the actor wore the teeniest-tiniest black miniskirt and bright red thigh-highs with pink ribbons tied around them in bows, like garters. To complete the look she added silver silk pumps and pearl drop earrings. Beautifully on theme.

But here’s the thing: You do not have to be promoting a Victorian-era period piece or doing Bridgerton cosplay to take inspo from from the thigh-high stockings.

For one thing, thigh-highs, knee socks, and tights under shorts were all a big part of indie sleaze dressing in the mid-2010s (see: this photo of Cara Delevingne from 2014), and the trends of that era are definitely on the come-up. We’ve already seen the return of wearing tights with sandals, a trend that was definitely emblematic of that particular era. Same goes for colorful tights, which are also making a comeback. Meanwhile, in May of 2025, Kaia Gerber wore a very similar thigh-highs-with-heels look, per Marie Claire, but in all black instead of blood red.
