Aavrani cofounder Rooshy Roy didn’t plan on starting a skin-care brand. Through she always knew she wanted to start something, the pieces didn’t come together until she left a career in finance for business school and met her cofounder, Justin Silver. Silver had perviously invested in the beauty brand Tatcha, and Roy quickly realized that she could introduce Indian ingredients to American women in the same way Tatcha did with Japanese ones.

“There’s so much that’s so sacred to our culture that hasn’t been brought here,” Roy recalls telling Silver. “I told him about the turmeric mask as an example. It’s just so iconic and Indian tradition to the point where it’s even a part of our wedding ceremonies. And for the first time, I was starting to appreciate that it was kind of cool that I have this innate knowledge, because I didn’t always feel so proud of my culture. I grew up in the suburbs of Detroit where there weren’t a lot of people that looked like me at school, so it was one of those things where I didn’t even realize what I knew and what I could offer.”
