Selena Gomez made a strong case for black-and-white fashion statements at the 2026 Golden Globes, but her ultra-sleek manicure was the true selling point. Luckily, her go-to nail artist Tom Bachik wasted no time sharing her “Velvet Noir” nails—and exactly how to copy her look.
Gomez, who was nominated for best performance by a female actor in a television series, attended the 83rd Golden Globe Awards wearing a custom black-velvet Chanel gown with a burst of white feathers at the bustier. The actor’s look was pure Old Hollywood glamour—down to the Marcel waved bob and red lip—but her manicure added a modern edge. Rather than sticking to the vintage vibe with a neutral mani on oval tips, Gomez wore a sleek black manicure on mid-length, square shaped nails.
While the manicure might look simple from a distance, its unique finish needs a closer look (see the close-up shot that Bachik shared during the ceremony here). The top layer is neither high-gloss nor matte; it’s a blurred, light-catching hybrid that resembles rich black leather.
Bachik confirmed that Chanel also dressed Sel’s nails: He used the brand’s La Base Camélia for a fortifying base coat, Le Vernis in Le Diable color for the inky black base, and Le Lift La Crème Main hand cream for smooth, red-carpet-ready hands.
As Selena Gomez proved at the Golden Globes, sleek black nails pair well with multiple diamond rings. Luckily for the rest of us, they pair well with just about everything else too. Consider this your sign to add a little luxury to your next manicure, even if it’s a simple one.
