Like it or not, it seems the skinny scarf has returned.

Spring has arrived, and with it, retailers have started stocking clothes made for the beach, sun, and weekend getaways. As usual, there are trendy bikinis and swimsuits that always ask for space in our closet, little tops meant to save us from the rising temperatures, and the kind of light floral dresses and skirts that define the season. These come back every year without fail, but there’s one new item we’ve spotted among the hoard: skinny scarves.

Once a favorite accessory of Hollywood starlets like Mischa Barton and Kate Moss in the 2000s, the skinny scarf hasn’t had as much play in recent years. But it seems the return of the boho chic aesthetic has also brought with it a renewed love for long thin scarves. And if the fashion insiders we’ve seen wearing it on the streets of Italy, Paris, Copenhagen, and New York are anything to go by, it’s a surprisingly versatile and photogenic trend that’ll instantly transform your outfit.

Obviously, adding a scarf to an outfit is not a new concept, but the silhouette does tend to change over the years. So if you want to add a chic and unexpected touch to a look right now, you’ll be ahead of the curve if you go for skinny scarves.

Adopt the trend this spring and summer by going for light, airy fabrics that pair well with a white tank, a tube, or a low-cut top. By fall, when we expect the trend to be at a fever pitch, you’ll be ready for knits that freshen up even the most minimalist basics.
