While 2020 has largely been a bust, it's safe to say Zendaya's had a pretty good year. After coming off a flurry of critical acclaim for Euphoria, in September she became the youngest Emmy winner in the outstanding leading actress in a drama category. Her joy was palpable through the TV screen. And while some of her projects have been placed on hold due to the pandemic, she hasn't let that stop her shine.
Up next: the Netflix film Malcom & Marie, which was written and filmed entirely in quarantine, and two bonus episodes of Euphoria. The first special episode premieres December 6—but no, this isn't the second season of the show. It's just a little present for the fans.
Add that to a deal with Lancôme, and Zendaya is one of the busiest women in Hollywood. This month, she lends her lashes to the brand's newest mascara launch, Lash Idôle, which is designed with a curved wand to lift and prevent smudging and micro-bristles to feather out every last lash. “I'm very excited about it because I love mascara; it's one of my favorite parts of my beauty routine,” she tells Glamour.
We caught up with Zendaya and asked her some of Glamour’s Big Beauty Questions, a rapid-fire Q&A on all things beauty. Read on for her makeup essentials, her self-care secrets, and the women who are inspiring her the most these days.

What’s one beauty trend you’re obsessed with right now?
I honestly don’t believe in beauty trends. I stick with what I’m feeling in the moment.
What’s one beauty rule you swear by?
I always make sure I take my makeup off before bed.
What’s one beauty rule you think is BS?
Similar to trends, I think beauty rules in general are BS! Do what you want and do what makes you feel best. That’s my beauty motto.

How do you prefer your lashes: long, thick, barely tinted?
I love long lashes. I like that they open my eyes and make them pop.
What’s the best mascara tip or trick you’ve ever learned?
One of the best tricks I’ve learned over the years is to use a face or cleansing oil to remove mascara, and to move slowly. It really helps keep them healthy and soft, plus it keeps the skin around my eyes nice and moisturized.

You’re stranded on a desert island. What are the three products you bring with you?
SPF, SPF, SPF! This is absolutely my ultimate nonnegotiable. I’m really loving the Lancôme UV Expert Aqua Gel SPF 50. It’s amazing on its own, but also serves as a really great primer under makeup. Otherwise, I’d bring mascara, of course, and a tube of Aquaphor—I carry it on me at all times.
What colors are you loving on your nails right now?
I usually do a nice bright or deep red depending on the season.
What’s your go-to getting-ready music?
Right now, it’s The Carter’s album “Everything Is Love.”
Your hair is gorgeous. What do you do to keep it in such great shape?
I try to minimize using any heat as much as possible.

What is your favorite way to take a moment for yourself?
I love doing my nails. I could do them for hours! I find it to be incredibly calming and meditative.
Would you rather get a facial or a massage?
Definitely a massage. It’s so relaxing.
You’ve got $20 and free roam of a drugstore. What do you buy?
Probably hair ties, you can never have enough. I literally stash them everywhere. Also just a bunch of beauty tools—tweezers, cotton rounds, nail files—you can never have too many of all of these things.
Who are the women inspiring you the most right now?
The women in my family, definitely. They are everything to me.
