Frequently asked questions

Do heat protectants really work?

Heat protectants absolutely work, says Katelyn Ellsworth, founder of The Roslyn, a salon in San Diego. “Heat protectants are the barrier between your hair and direct heat,” she says. These products contain humectants—like panthenol and propylene glycol—to seal moisture in the hair cuticle and fend off frizziness and flyaways. Ultimately, applying a protective barrier before going in with a blow-dryer (or other heated styling tool) will not only give you a smoother, longer-lasting style but also protect your strands from the heat of those devices.

How damaging is heat for hair?

Hot tools can cause both short- and long-term damage to hair, says Anna Chacon, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist. “Heat styling tools strip the hair of its natural oils, leading to dry, brittle strands that are prone to breakage and split ends,” she says. “Regular and prolonged heat exposure can even cause permanent damage, affecting the hair’s strength and elasticity.” But, Dr. Chacon says, there are ways to minimize damage and maintain your hair’s health while using styling tools; for example, “before drying your hair, spray or apply a heat protectant. And if you’re straightening, ensure your hair is completely dry before, as using irons on damp hair can cause additional damage.”

Is heat protectant spray or cream better for your hair?

Rogerio Cavalcante, NYC-based stylist and owner of the Second Floor Salon, says it depends on your hair type and needs.

  • Spray: Great for fine or thin hair, as it’s lightweight and easy to distribute evenly without weighing the hair down
  • Cream: Ideal for dry or frizzy hair because it provides extra moisture and smoothness
  • Oil: Works well for dense or coarse hair that needs both heat protection and shine

What steps should you take before straightening or curling hair with a hot tool?

“Brush your hair thoroughly to detangle, then apply heat protectant evenly from midlength to ends,” says Cavalcante. It’s also important to choose a product designed specifically to protect up to 450 degrees. “Next, make sure the product is fully absorbed or dried before using any heat tools to avoid steam or sizzling.”

What is the difference between thermal protectant and heat protectant?

There’s no real difference between a thermal protectant and heat protectant. “Both terms refer to products designed to protect hair from heat damage caused by styling tools like flatirons, curling wands, and blow-dryers,” says Cavalcante.

Is it bad to put too much heat protectant in your hair?

Using too much heat protectant can make your hair feel greasy, heavy, or overly moist, which might affect how well your hairstyle holds, Cavalcante explains. “However, it won’t damage your hair. It’s more about finding the right amount and evenly distributing the product.”
