Hot tools may be a nonnegotiable in your styling routine, but there’s no point in splurging on a quality straightener if you’re not applying the best heat protectant sprays or creams before using it. “Heat damage can lead to a dull, lifeless appearance as it wears down the hair’s cuticle or outer layer,” says Anna Chacon, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist.
Even if you’re just doing a quick blow-dry to get out the door, stylists always recommend applying a protective spray to help prevent the dryness, frizz, and split ends that come with using a heated tool—be it a curling iron, a flatiron, or a blow-dry brush you scored on Amazon. A heat protectant will also save you from putting all your hopes on a restorative hair mask or a leave-in conditioner that might not deliver the immediate results you want.
We spent weeks testing the best heat protectors for your hair care routine, and polled hair stylists and editors about their recommended picks. Our top pick overall was the Olaplex No. 9 Bond Protector Nourishing Hair Serum because it is stylist-recommended, contains antioxidants to help nourish and protect strands, and is affordable at $30 (not to mention, you can get it in two days with Prime shipping). We also found options for curly hair, fine hair, frizzy hair, and more.
We tested heat protectants by evaluating their ingredients, how well they absorbed into our strands, and whether they kept our hair well protected from hot tools. The best ones we used had hydrating and moisturizing ingredients, as well as antioxidants to shield hair from heat and UV damage. The formulas also ranged from lightweight creams to serums and sprays, and didn’t weigh our hair down after application. Finally, the protectants that made this list kept our hair singe-free, healthy looking, and strong, even after using iron-hot straighteners, curlers, and blow-dryers.

Olaplex No. 9 Bond Protector Nourishing Hair Serum
It should surprise no one to see Olaplex at the top of this list—the company makes some of the hardest working products out there, especially when it comes to dry, damaged hair. With a proprietary complex scientifically shown to repair broken bonds, this antioxidant-rich, silicone-free serum protects against heat damage as well as environmental pollutants and free radicals. “Olaplex fills the hair and makes it stronger, and you won’t burn your hair when heat styling if you use this product,” says hairstylist Paul Labrecque. We especially love its weightless feel and how well it works with all hair types and textures.
“This hair serum is a go-to for me,” says Glamour’s commerce writer Alanna Martine Kilkeary. “It’s lightweight and nonsticky, and it doesn’t weigh down my fine hair. I like to use it as a primer all over my strands right before I straighten my hair in the mornings. It sinks in upon contact and doesn’t make my hair look greasy, and does a great job at ensuring my hair doesn’t totally fry. That, combined with the price, makes it by far the best overall on this list.”

When choosing a heat protectant for thin hair, Rogerio Cavalcante, NYC-based stylist and owner of the Second Floor Salon, highly recommends a spray. “You want to choose a formula that’s lightweight and easy to distribute evenly without weighing hair down,” he says. This sweet-smelling bottle does just that thanks to a slew of moisturizing ingredients including agave leaf extract, prickly pear seed oil, and moringa leaf extract. The mist is also superfine, and allows you to basically cover your whole head in just one to three pumps.
Glamour’s Kilkeary is also a big fan. “When I’m styling my hair every day, you’ll see me constantly reaching for this bottle,” she says. “The formula is super nourishing and doesn’t make my hair look dry and crunchy after heat styling—instead it gives me a silky, long-lasting finish. This one also smells like a dream, which makes the whole experience that much more enjoyable.”
This restorative formula not only protects against heat up to 450 degrees, but it also helps strengthen and repair already damaged hair, thanks to a blend of protein and amino acids in the ingredient list. Ceramides add to the good-for-your-hair factor, moisturizing and even improving the overall elasticity.
Glamour contributor Clare Holden uses this when going for a bouncy blow-dry. “This serum keeps my hair tangle-free and works well when I want to add some waves or curls to the ends when styling,” Holden says. “Once I’m done, my hair feels smoother and I can run my fingers through it easily.”

Best for Fine Hair: Davines Melu Hair Shield

Fine hair types will love this mist that hydrates the hair and protects it from heat. It also works to address stubborn static and is best used on long hair.
“My long, easy-to-tangle hair absolutely drinks this protectant up,” says Glamour’s Kilkeary. “It has a blend of lentil seed extract and glutamic acid, which works to repair and strengthen hair. I also notoriously deal with static after I heat-style, and this has managed to completely tame it and keep my strands totally straight and soft.”
“I love this one because it not only protects the hair from heat but also nourishes it with guava extract, which is rich in antioxidants,” says Cavalcante. “It’s lightweight and smells amazing.” It has a nongreasy finish that’s great for thick hair types without leaving behind any residue.
“I have long, thick hair, but I can get a lot of product from this bottle. I start by spraying on damp hair and then detangling with my hair brush. Then I use my T3 curling iron, some Rōz hair oil, and Oribe hair spray to style it. I like that it protects my strands but also helps with frizz. I also love the guava scent, which is perfect for the summer,” says Glamour senior commerce editor Jenifer Calle.
If you have color-treated hair, it may already be a little bit damaged, and you’ll want to make sure it’s amply protected when you heat-style it. This heat shield will do just that and is safe to use if you often dye your strands. It’s suitable for all hair types, whether you have straight hair, wavy, curly, or anything in between.
“I like to use high heat with my straightener to get that super-sleek finish, so I appreciate that this protects up to 450 degrees. I also love that it’s designed for dry hair, since I usually let my hair air-dry before styling and often touch up prestyled sections," says Glamour contributor Brigitt Earley. “The scent is a standout too—it has that nostalgic salon smell that really lingers. Best of all, there’s no sticky, heavy, or crunchy feeling—you can see the product works to smooth and reduce frizz, but it basically feels like there’s nothing in your hair.”
Another blow-dry spray that’s a favorite of Cavalcante, who says this is a solid option if you style your hair frequently with hot tools. “It offers long-lasting protection against high heat and helps maintain style while keeping the hair touchably soft, and I love that it can be used on dry or damp hair,” he says.
Glamour’s Kilkeary finds it especially useful for combatting her frizz after heat-styling. “No matter what I do, my hair tends to frizz after I blow-dry it, every single time,” she says. “When I tried this spray, it actually managed to keep my flyaways in check post-blow-dry. I think the trick is applying it on damp hair all over right before I hit it with heat. It managed to keep my hair really silky and smooth.”
We love this cream that protects all curl types and doesn’t weigh hair down. “This cream is especially great for frizz-prone or dry hair. It provides heat protection while also smoothing and softening the hair, making it ideal for blowouts or flatironing,” says Cavalcante. It protects up to 450° and minimizes frizz post-styling. It also contains a blend of rosehip, argan, and coconut oils to help seal in moisture and protect against breakage.
Safe for both color- and keratin-treated hair, this super-lightweight styler boasts a special heat-activated polymer technology that helps protect the integrity of your strands while styling, says Nikki Corzine, owner of The Canyon Salon in Westlake Village, California. It also contains nourishing oils, like maracuja oil, to both protect and moisturize, as well as provide UV protection. The silky cream formula elevates any home blow-out and, along with its luxurious packaging, makes this balm worth the investment.
“If you want a lightweight cream, this is one to not sleep on. It’s velvety smooth in texture, and a little of it goes a long way," says Glamour’s Kilkeary. “If I’m curling my hair, I like to apply a small amount of this from my midshafts to my ends, curl the piece, and let it sit in a roller for 10 minutes. I’m left with glossy, strong curls every time I use this and never run into any issues with hair burning.”
For those who find that serums and creams weigh down their hair or tend to leave it looking greasy, this spray from Moroccanoil is the one to reach for. Leading cosmetologist Anna Peterson loves its weightless feel, telling us, “This spray offers protection up to 450 degrees and, as it’s infused with argan oil, it also nourishes while it shields.” It can be applied to both damp and dry hair, so if you need to use your straighteners in between washes, a light spritz of this product helps to keep your hair protected and looking healthy at all times.
This splurge-worthy mist is a fun addition to any hair care routine. It leaves hair shiny and frizz-free thanks to hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and a botanical extract complex that protects and nourishes hair.
“I’d recommend this mist to anyone who really heat-styles their hair every single day and wants something extra luxe,” says Glamour’s Kilkeary. “The formula is not overly thick or too thin and runny; it actually has a really nice slip when applying it onto your strands. It definitely kept my hair super moisturized after I straightened it but didn’t make it look oily.”
What we love: Fights frizz; leaves hair smooth and not oily

Frequently asked questions
Do heat protectants really work?
Heat protectants absolutely work, says Katelyn Ellsworth, founder of The Roslyn, a salon in San Diego. “Heat protectants are the barrier between your hair and direct heat,” she says. These products contain humectants—like panthenol and propylene glycol—to seal moisture in the hair cuticle and fend off frizziness and flyaways. Ultimately, applying a protective barrier before going in with a blow-dryer (or other heated styling tool) will not only give you a smoother, longer-lasting style but also protect your strands from the heat of those devices.
How damaging is heat for hair?
Hot tools can cause both short- and long-term damage to hair, says Anna Chacon, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist. “Heat styling tools strip the hair of its natural oils, leading to dry, brittle strands that are prone to breakage and split ends,” she says. “Regular and prolonged heat exposure can even cause permanent damage, affecting the hair’s strength and elasticity.” But, Dr. Chacon says, there are ways to minimize damage and maintain your hair’s health while using styling tools; for example, “before drying your hair, spray or apply a heat protectant. And if you’re straightening, ensure your hair is completely dry before, as using irons on damp hair can cause additional damage.”
Is heat protectant spray or cream better for your hair?
Spray: Great for fine or thin hair, as it’s lightweight and easy to distribute evenly without weighing the hair down
Cream: Ideal for dry or frizzy hair because it provides extra moisture and smoothness
Oil: Works well for dense or coarse hair that needs both heat protection and shine
What steps should you take before straightening or curling hair with a hot tool?
“Brush your hair thoroughly to detangle, then apply heat protectant evenly from midlength to ends,” says Cavalcante. It’s also important to choose a product designed specifically to protect up to 450 degrees. “Next, make sure the product is fully absorbed or dried before using any heat tools to avoid steam or sizzling.”
What is the difference between thermal protectant and heat protectant?
There’s no real difference between a thermal protectant and heat protectant. “Both terms refer to products designed to protect hair from heat damage caused by styling tools like flatirons, curling wands, and blow-dryers,” says Cavalcante.
Is it bad to put too much heat protectant in your hair?
Using too much heat protectant can make your hair feel greasy, heavy, or overly moist, which might affect how well your hairstyle holds, Cavalcante explains. “However, it won’t damage your hair. It’s more about finding the right amount and evenly distributing the product.”
