Whether you need your makeup to stay put for an event, or want to keep your full beat intact past your work day, spritzing one of the best setting sprays as the final step before you walk out the door will do wonders.
If you haven’t dabbled in this category yet, a setting spray is “a fine mist applied over a completed makeup application to lock in your look,” says celebrity makeup artist Christian Briceno. “It's great for avoiding a powdery finish and providing long-lasting wear.”
To find the best ones on the market, we combed through dozens of formulas and relied on recommendations from Glamour editors and makeup artists to land on the absolute best options for every skin type and concern. Our absolute favorite: Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray, for its ability to keep makeup in place all day and stop foundation from settling into fine lines or wrinkles.
To find the best setting sprays, we considered factors like price, efficacy, and expert approval. We then tested each of these formulas on editors and contributors across skin types and tones to make sure they truly kept makeup in place, didn’t have an off-putting scent, and delivered a flattering finish to skin.
How do setting sprays actually work?
Yes, setting spray works, as long as you make sure to take a few things into consideration. First, think about your skin type. “If you have oily skin, a mattifying spray containing alcohol or silica can help control excessive shine and help with extended wear,” says Briceno. “A hydrating mist with hyaluronic acid can alleviate dry skin. For sensitive skin, I would recommend a fragrance- or alcohol-free product to avoid any skin reactions.”
Next, ask yourself what you’d like your skin to look like. “For a glowy, illuminated finish, sprays with light reflecting particles are great, but be conscious that if you have any textured areas, a dewy setting spray can enhance problematic skin,” he adds.
Lastly, be sure to apply your setting spray correctly for best results. Before spritzing, “always shake the container to help mix all the ingredients well,” says Briceno.
Then, “spray it in a T and X pattern for even coverage and hold it 8-10 inches away from the face,” he adds. “I spray the makeup sponge or brush before applying complexion products to help it set from within for extra longevity.”
An extra pro tip: “I also suggest spraying it between layers (after foundation and after powder) for an almost bulletproof staying power,” he says.

Numbers don’t lie, and several Glamour editors named this setting spray their favorite of all time. Glamour senior beauty editor Ariana Yaptangco swears by its ability to lock in makeup and tame oiliness. “I truly cannot live without this product,” says Yaptangco. “Case in point: I attended a beachside summer wedding and forgot my travel-size spray. I forced my whole family to make a pitstop at Ulta just before we reached our destination after six hours in the car so I could buy one. It’s that serious.”
Andpros like Briceno trust it, too. “It helps hold makeup and prevent it from setting into fine lines,” he says.
Glamour beauty contributor Lisa DeSantis is also a fan. “This is my everyday go-to,” she says. “A few spritzes of the lightweight mist lock in my makeup and create a beautiful soft-focus finish, but it’s also such a treat to the senses when I spray it on. It has a fresh, floral scent that has a calming effect on me. It’s the perfect finishing touch to my morning makeup, allowing me to start my day on the right note.”
Pros: Keeps oiliness in check; fresh scent; delivers a soft-focus finish that doesn’t settle into lines
Cons: Pricey
Key ingredients: Film former polymers, Japanese green tea, aromatic resin
Finish: Pore-blurring
Waterproof: Yes

An all-time classic setting spray, Urban Decay has long been a favorite for editors and consumers alike. Thanks to an up-to-16-hour wear, you can trust it to keep your makeup looking flawless all day (and all night, hence the name!).
Glamour senior commerce editor Jenifer Calle uses this spray almost every day. “Although I don’t wear a ton of makeup, I like that it’s a light spray. It never feels overly tacky or oily.”
Glamour contributor Samantha Leach also likes the smooth mist. “When it comes to makeup, there’s one thing that matters to me above all else: that it feels weightless. I’m a minimalist—on the average day I wear little more than a light coat of tinted moisturizer—so I never want my face to feel cakey. But let me tell you, Urban Decay passed my weightlessness test. I forgot that I even had it on (a huge compliment from me), and it kept my tinted moisturizer shining all day long,” she says.
Pros: Weightless; non-cakey
Cons: Makeup may still transfer
Key ingredients: Dimethicone, aloe vera
Finish: Natural
Waterproof: No
Fragrance-free: No

One/Size by Patrick Starrr On 'Til Dawn Mattifying Waterproof Setting Spray
Editors can’t get enough of One/Size’s Beyoncé-approved setting spray, which Glamour contributor Danielle Sinay put to the test during a heatwave. “I am a total convert and will never use another setting spray again,” she says. “The One/Size product seriously changed my sweaty, oily life forevermore, and I’m going to get the travel-size bottle the millisecond it’s back in stock. It is, as the youths say, ‘worth the hype.’ I also advise stocking up now since it’s consistently, and understandably, selling out at Sephora.”
Glamour beauty contributor Lisa DeSantis recommends wearing this waterproof formula for important events. “This spray is no joke—if I know I’m going to be sweating, out in the heat or humidity, this is what I'm reaching for,” she says. “I save it for special occasions when I know that I need my makeup to stay put. It’s what kept Beyoncé’s makeup intact while performing a rainy show, so you know it’s good.”
Pros: Ultra-long lasting; keeps makeup in place even with sweat, oil, and water
Cons: Nozzle can be improved
Key ingredients: Green tea extract, witch hazel
Finish: Matte
Waterproof: Yes
Fragrance-free: No
Best Dewy: Nars Light Reflecting Hydrating Makeup Setting Mist

We love a clean girl makeup look, but just because your makeup looks effortless doesn’t mean it’ll automatically stay put all day. And this is where the Nars setting mist steps in. Though it delivers serious setting power, it looks like you’ve done next to nothing. Think ‘I woke up like this’ skin.
“I'm a matte girl through and through, but sometimes you want a dewy, skinlike finish. This setting spray gives you that luminous hydrated look, but still keeps your makeup locked in place. Make sure not to spray too much—especially if you have oily skin—otherwise things can turn a little greasy. Overall, this is a good option for every day and best of all, it’s unscented,” says Glamour's Yaptangco.
Pros: Hydrates skin; gives a naturally luminous look
A 2023 Glamour Beauty Award winner, this luxurious setting spray rose to the top of the submissions thanks to its efficacy and quality. Spritzing the aptly-named spray across your skin is indeed like getting insurance on your makeup–it will keep everything in place while also helping defend against environmental stressors (thanks to antioxidants in the formula).
The “first thing I noticed is that the design of the bottle is impressive and feels heavy-duty. Overall it has a delightful scent, feels incredibly lightweight, and leaves my makeup looking flawless. Give it a good shake before you spritz for the perfect application. It’s one of the best setting sprays I've ever used,” says Glamour contributor Ru Wolle.
Huda Beauty is well known for its setting powder, so when the brand debuted a new setting spray, fans were instantly intrigued. It contains similar ingredients to the powder, including rice starch, which helps blur pores and absorb oil to give that filter-like, blurred look without drying out skin.
“This mist of this is fine but powerful, and all it takes is a shake of the bottle and a spritz to get your makeup to stay all day into night,” says Glamour's Kilkeary. “I love that this formula has rice starch in it to help absorb excess oil, and I've definitely noticed a difference in how shiny my skin looks by late afternoon—it's just as matte and refreshed as it was in the morning when I first spritzed it on.”
Pros: Mattifying and blurring; absorbs oil
Cons: Spray mechanism is finicky
Key ingredients: Rice starch, hyaluronic acid, mineral clay
Oily skin is no match for Milk Makeup’s shine-controlling and blurring setting spray. Though this formula has powerful mattifying capabilities, even when it comes to summer sweat, it contains no alcohol, meaning you won’t have to worry about it drying out your skin. Plus, it delivers a soft-focus finish (read: goodbye pores!) for up to 16 hours.
“This is one of my favorite setting sprays to use in the summertime, when my skin turns really oily, especially in the afternoons,” says Glamour’s commerce writer Alanna Martine Kilkeary. “It has a blend of lentil extract, niacinamide and bakuchiol to smooth fine lines and make skin look like velvet all day. I like to spritz my whole face with one pump, and then do an extra pump around my nose, where my makeup tends to crease. Every time, it keeps my foundation looking matte and shine- and crack-free.”
Pros: Mattifies skin; contains no alcohol; boosted with skin care ingredients
Cons: Some reviewers report spray nozzle becoming faulty
This under-$20 priming and setting mist won a 2023 Glamour Beauty Award for its ability to help makeup stay in place all day and night. “As someone who often finds themselves at events that last well into the night, finding the best products to set my makeup is crucial,” says Amanda Cuttitta, a Glamour contributor. “This setting spray from Morphe proved to be a game changer. Not only did it keep my makeup intact throughout the evening, it also got the job done without the overpowering scent that so many setting sprays tend to have. I love that it didn’t leave my skin looking greasy, striking that perfect balance between a natural matte finish and a healthy glow.” Beyond setting, you can also use this to prep your skin before putting any product on to help nourish and even your complexion. Thanks to ceramides, electrolytes, and antioxidants, it helps hydrate and nourish the skin barrier before and after you apply makeup.
Pros: Can be used to prep and set skin; contains skin-boosting ingredients; no overwhelming scent
Cons: Some reviewers with acne-prone skin say it causes breakouts
An “original staple in pro makeup artists’ kits,” Briceno says, this formula comes out as a light mist, making it perfect for a little refresh. A multitasker, “it is great for spritzing in between layers, rehydrates the skin, and has a soothing aroma,” adds Briceno.
And users love it just as much: “This setting spray feels like a face mist—light and refreshing—but it’ll ensure your makeup stays fresh all day long. Eight hours later my foundation, concealer, eye shadow, and all that jazz still looked as good as they did when I applied them in the morning (and not like they’d gone through a full workday),” says Ana Colón, a Glamour contributor.
Pros: Refreshing mist; expert-approved; can be used in between applying layers of makeup
Cons: Some reviewers think it’s not as long-lasting as other setting sprays.
Key ingredients: Green tea, chamomile, and cucumber extracts
A product that doubles as a skin prep spray and a finishing spray? Sign us up. You can count Briceno as a fan also: “This finishing spray is one of my favorites,” he says. “I use it for skin prep to hydrate and refresh the skin, and then as a skin finisher.” It works to tone the skin (read {tighten pores”), deliver glow, and of course, keep makeup in place. Made with natural ingredients, the makeup-artist-approved formula feels like a spa in a bottle and will deliver noticeable benefits to your skin and makeup.
Pros: Makeup-artist-approved; reduces the appearance of pores; made with natural ingredients
Cons: Expensive
Key ingredients: Rosemary, lemon balm, rose, and mint essential oils; orange blossom water; grape extract
